Nikon have announced a firmware update to v3.0 for the Nikon Z8.

Pixel shift, importing Custom Picture Controls and improvements to focus-limiter controls are amongst the new features.

This week I've been learning about Insta 360’s Ace Pro 2 and I have to say, I’ve been completely blown away by it’s specs.

According to the Nikon firmware website, version 5.20 brings the following:

  • - In synchronized release, pressing the shutter-release button of the master camera halfway initiated autofocus on the remote camera with the following setting selected.

Weefine have just released a new ring light, the WF101 Ringlight 3000 Version 2 to compliment their existing WF105 Ring Light 3000 CCW but what are the differences between the two and why would you prefer to use one over an external strobe?

Ring Lights are particularly useful in macro underwater photography, providing shadow-free illumination when a subject is close to the lens (the WF105 Ring Light provides 1000 lumens of light allowing users to shoot at just a 25 mm distance from their subject), super ideal for lighting tiny subjects, particularly if they are in an area difficult to illuminate evenly with an external strobe.  They are a fabulous smaller, lighter (just 470 or 480 grms above water/245 arms underwater), more economical option for those macro lovers starting out in underwater photography who don’t want or need to invest in a larger, heavier strobe.

Both versions provide a 90 degree beam angle with a continuous 1800 lumens of light for 45 minutes and 3000 lumens for 12 hrs of strobe use.  As mentioned above the WF105 is a Super Close Ring Light providing 1000 lumens allowing for softer lighting, making it ideal for super close subjects.  Both have a built-in strobe port offering a Strobe Mode with a specialised optical fibre cable.  The newer version WF101, also provides extra options of blue and red light aside from white light (5500k), whereas the WF105 offers the possibility of adjusting the colour temperature (3500-8000k) to allow extra colour precision.  It also has 19 brightness options via an adjustment knob compared to 4 with the newer WF101 V2 via a push button which also boasts 4 choices of power levels - 100%, 75%, 50% and 25%.

Battery wise, the WF105 offers the extra option of USB-C charging, with both offering 3 colours to indicate battery power, making it easy to see if a quick boost is needed between dives.

Finally both are depth rated to 100 ms/330ft and offer the ability to be used with lenses of both a 52 mm and 67 mm lens thread.

To sum up, Ring Lights are a fabulous way for a beginner to get started capturing their favourite macro subjects as the light will never need repositioning, giving your subject a flattering soft glow and can lessen the risk of backscatter in your images.

Nauticam has introduced its underwater housing for the new Nikon Z6 III. This third-generation midrange full-frame mirrorless camera is the first of its kind to feature a “partially stacked CMOS sensor.” This innovation offers many of the advantages of a fully stacked sensor—like faster autofocus, reduced rolling shutter, quicker continuous shooting, and higher frame-rate video capture—while keeping manufacturing costs lower. For the first time in the cinema EOS system, the Canon EOS C400 camera features a newly developed 6K full-frame, back-illuminated CMOS sensor, with triple-base ISO, allowing the camera to deliver stunning imagery in a wide range of lighting conditions. The base ISOs of 800, 3200, and 12,800 maximize the full dynamic range of the camera.

An additional benefit of the EOS C400 camera’s sensor is the support for the next generation of Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS Autofocus, Dual Pixel AF II. The back-illuminated stacked positioning offers better light-capturing efficiency, which widens the area of the sensor that can be used for autofocusing. The sensor also empowers faster readout speed, as well as better 4K image quality from 6K oversampling.

The EOS C400 camera records in 6K full frame up to 60p in 12-bit Cinema RAW Light. By changing the sensor mode, the camera can record 4K RAW up to 120fps and 2K RAW up to 180fps. This is all recorded in Canon’s latest iteration of Cinema RAW Light, which provides three different recording modes to choose from depending on your file size preference and workflow.

Other recording options include the Canon-developed, industry standard XF-AVC codec which can be recorded in 10-bit 4:2:2 with oversampling from the 6K sensor, helping to create rich detail and smooth imagery, at frame rates up to 120P, without the need for cropping the image from the sensor. Canon is also introducing two new recording codecs into the EOS C400 camera, XF-AVC S and XF-HEVC S. These formats feature an easy-to-manage naming system and folder structure, while recording in the familiar MP4 format and preserving metadata.

All of these options are recorded to the camera’s CFexpress slot with sub-recording and proxy options available to the SD Card slot, which allows for simultaneous recording even when shooting RAW.

Fujifilm has released updates for some of its X and GFX-series cameras including the X100VI plus the X-S10, X-T30 II, X-T3/X-T4 andGFX S50 II

Updates are available via Fujifilm's App available on the Apple App Store for IOS users and the Google Play Store for Android's.

A new update to Lightroom Classic appeared today (14 Dec). This is v13.1 and follows on from 13.0.01 and 13.0.2 which were released some weeks ago.

Although the download was very slow (an Adobe banner acknowledged this and said it was being fixed), the update seems to work without a problem.

Adobe report that the update fixes bugs and provides support to new cameras. No new features apparently.
