Bertrand Loyer's film was shot in 2015 on an ocean buoy between France and Corsica.
It was the first time it was filmed alive (and not dying or dead) in its environment. they encountered several Giant oarfish. Some had their tails cut off after the anal slit, while others, more complete, measured up to 9 m!
The footage is exceptional. The sounds and music, based on the wind instrument Duduk, impart a very spooky note to the images.
Giant oarfish apart, there is a shot of a white shark in the Mediterranean Sea. I never figured out if it is stock footage or was taken while diving under the buoy.

(NASDAQ: GPRO) today announced the upcoming launch of GP3, its most powerful custom imaging processor to date. Exclusive to GoPro, GP3 is a 5-nanometer System-on-a-Chip (SoC) that delivers more than 2X the pixel processing power and superior AI-driven image quality and low-light performance over its predecessor, GP2. GP3's power efficiency and thermal performance are expected to significantly outperform the competition, resulting in industry-leading runtimes in the most demanding environmental conditions. These advancements position GP3 to usher in a new era of professional-level image quality, low-light performance, resolution and frame rates for small form-factor camera markets, including action cameras, 360 cameras, vlogging cameras, and ultra-premium, compact cinema-grade cameras.

Accompanying images captured on GoPro's next‑generation camera system powered by GP3 showcase the breakthrough image quality and low-light performance enabled by this new technology.

At the heart of GoPro's innovative GP3 processor is a specialized AI Neural Processor Unit (NPU) that enables next-generation video pixel processing and market-leading low-light image performance. GP3 also features dedicated cores for scene recognition and subject detection, allowing GoPro cameras to understand their environment in real-time and adjust camera settings automatically. And with its 5-nanometer architecture and exceedingly efficient power-profile, GP3 is expected to enable market-leading resolutions and frame rates with runtimes and thermal performance that significantly outperform the competition.

"We expect our new, exclusive GP3 processor to lead in every performance area—image quality, resolution, frame rates, low-light performance and power and thermal efficiency," said Pablo Lema, GoPro's Senior Vice President of Product Management. "Launching in our new products in Q2, GP3 provides a scalable, proprietary foundation we can leverage to power GoPro cameras across existing and future product categories. Our markets demand the very best performance, and we believe this sets the stage for GP3 to serve as a growth catalyst for GoPro."

"GP3's bleeding-edge, cinema-grade performance will enable GoPro to enter the ultra-premium end of the imaging market this year, serving the needs of a new, higher-end market segment that can grow GoPro's business and brand," said Nicholas Woodman, GoPro's founder and CEO. "We're excited for GP3 to empower GoPro as both an innovator and disrupter as we look to grow our business through market-leading technology and performance."

GP3 will debut in new GoPro cameras in Q2 2026.

Source: https://investor.gopro.com/press-releases/press-release-details/2026/GoPro-Announces-Exclusive-Next-Generation-AI-Enhanced-GP3-Processor-Setting-a-New-Image-Quality-Standard-in-Low-Light-Capture-Runtimes-and-Thermal-Performance/default.aspx

Pelagic Dive logbook and Photo organiser

Hello!

I'm new to the forums and a diver and underwater photographer, and I've been building a desktop app called Pelagic, basically a dive logbook and photo organiser rolled into one, with a few bells and whistles attached. The idea came from being frustrated with having dive logs in one place, photos in another, and species IDs scattered across notes etc.

So in theory it connects to 60+ dive computers (Shearwater, Suunto, Garmin, Scubapro, Mares, etc.) using the open source libdivecomputer library although I've only managed to test my Suunto eon core and garmin files so far. Once you've imported your dives and added them to a trip, you can add your photos and as long as your dive computer time/date and your camera's are somewhat synced up it will automatically sort your photos into the imported dives.

Once imported to your photo library you can tag species with common and scientific names, add a google gemini API key for AI ID, and writes all the metadata back to your images as XMP so it survives into Lightroom or whatever your editing workflow is, speaking of which you can launch your preferred editor directly from the app. Once edited Pelagic will track the edited file and import it back into the app enabling you to side by side compare the raw and edited versions.

There's also a built-in community map, a global database of dive sites contributed by Pelagic users. All data is anonymous so no usernames or personal info are attached to submissions. You can browse dive sites, see what species have been spotted there, and check depth ranges where sightings occurred. It's the kind of thing that's genuinely useful for trip planning or if you're heading to a new area you can pull up nearby sites and see recent observations. It works the other way too, after your dives, your species tags feed back into the database so the next person planning a trip benefits from your data. The whole thing runs on the idea that shared, anonymous sighting data makes everyone's diving better.

There's also an equipment tracking system, you can catalog all your dive and camera gear with brand, model, serial numbers, and purchase dates. You can group items into equipment sets (like your cold water kit vs. tropical setup, or your macro rig vs. wide angle), so you've got a quick record of what you took on each trip and it all stays in the log history. Handy for insurance purposes, keeping track of service intervals.

Still actively developing it and there's a ton more features I haven't covered here. What are your essential spares that you bring on an underwater photography trip? It seems like if any one thing breaks it would be a huge problem and could derail the trip. Do you bring spare camera housing handles, extra strobe, mask/snorkle, Eztra O-rings, etc? Are there any items on housings such as camera handles that experience has taught you are most likely to break?

The effective ingredient is sulfamic acid, which is sold as a cleaner at places like Home Depot. When sufficiently diluted it is safe, non-toxic, harmless. The Salt-Away label says it is effective even at 1:500 proportions.

I'm taking a trip soon with a Kraken rinse bag so I'll have a chance to try it on just my own gear when rinse and soak options are limited. To save weight and space I might take the crystal version instead of liquid Salt-Away. An old film canister full would probably last me the whole two weeks. Four ounces of the 99% reagent version is about $12.

Has anyone here used it? Here, the comparison is even more extreme because we are talking about an excellent but older M43 camera as the Panasonic G9, medium format digital cameras like the Fujifilm GFX 50S, and medium format film cameras.

The guy evaluates the image quality by looking at digital files and physical prints measuring 16x20 inches. Because the digital files were cropped to a square ratio to match the film camera, the magnification level of the prints equals a larger 26x20 inch format.

During the evaluation, the MF digital camera displays finer details and smoother rendering. On close inspection of the physical prints, the medium format images show more distinct lettering and sharper elements. When observing the prints from a normal viewing distance, the results from the M43 and the MF cameras appear identical. It is necessary to stand very close and examine the prints side by side to notice the variations. Without having two prints next to each other, it is difficult to identify which camera system captured the image.

The video also notes that using AI upscaling software on M43 images produces results that approach native medium format resolution. The software can sometimes introduce minor visual artifacts. The M43 system maintains an advantage in portability, as a full medium format kit would be larger and heavier. He observes that elements such as composition, focus placement, and aperture selection have a larger impact on the final image than the camera format.

Berkley White, Backscatter, Bitten by Tiger Shark

Seems to be ok...

Article
