I used two Light & Motion Sola 2000 Video lights, with one positioned at 9 o’clock and the second at roughly 1 o’clock. The light at 9 o’clock I set at 1000 lumen output, and the light at 1 o’clock I set at 500 lumen output. This did a really nice job of illuminating any translucent bodies, yet was still not too bright to overpower most of the bioluminescence."

Rig buoyancy must be quite tricky as well - even though we are dealing with macro subjects, since most of the action takes place in the water column, the rig would need to be as neutral as possible to allow for short stable sequences, which is a world away from usually very tripod-dependent macro video...
The difficulty of getting stable hand-held video footage of small critters moving freely in the water column would probably mean having to slow down footage at some point, not so much for actual slow-motion/stabilisation but rather to extend the length of a useable, in-focus sequence - meaning 60fps is probably required.

I'm guessing this really depends on the critters, but I was wondering if using some kind of fixed highly directional light beam (thinking of a snoot beam, pointed up) might be an option to get planktonic critters closer to the rig, and other critters interested in these, functioning as a kind of critter-aggregating-device...
This is just an idea, which would not be possible in a typical black-water with other photographers and divers hanging on a line - but I'm not sure how the constant-light requirements of black-water video shooting would combine with black-water still-shooting anyway.

Looking forward to reading about your black-water video shooting experiments!

cheers
ben

DiveVolk SeaLink monitor kit

We're heading for some critter diving in a couple of weeks and I'm thinking about doing some video with my OM-1 and its various video limitations. I also use a DiveVolk. The recent thread regarding underwater monitors lost me at LUT (actually, before LUT), so I'm starting fresh.

As Barmaglot posted a couple of months back, DiveVolk has a device, the $200 "Sealink Contact Type Underwater WiFi Signal Transmitter," which uses the WiFi capabilities of a smartphone and a modern camera to configure the phone as an external monitor--and, using OM Systems's OI-Share (or possibly other apps), as both a external monitor and a camera controller. Seems pretty cool! There's a solid review of it by an underwater video guy (Mattias Lebo) on YouTube, and as I already have the DiveVolk housing, it's an easy decision to give it a shot.

But I do have a couple of questions. First, has anyone given it a try? Second, I've seen housings rigged with a bridge between the tray handles which provides a stable mount for a monitor. Are those one-off items? Does anyone know a source for them? I've looked pretty hard to no avail.

	Thanks,

It consists out of two aluminum profiles and a few amazon aluminum cheese plates. The goal is to have neutral rig with adjustable trim (with small weights on a sled), so I can do some tilted shots against the sun and so on. The profiles are that long on the rear end, because of the 6inch monitor, so I have enough space to mount ist perfectly for alle my needs. An additional benefit is that I can put my camera down, without the hazard of scratching the housing. There is a rubber boot at the bottom of the profile. The products you can buy are too expensive and sometimes too small. I tried to keep everything as close to the housing as possible to mimic a bigger cine housing. What do you think?

Daniel

Open gate, underwater, and corner sharpness

While I have no experience with it, the recent release of a diversity of cameras that can shoot full frame open gate (3:2 form) has made me wonder how this would work underwater. (correct me if I'm wrong though, and feel free to let me know: "just check some other thread".

So, anyways, I just got myself a Seafrogs housing for my Sony A7V since I will be going to the Maldives for an 8 day LOB (hopefully with beautiful pelagics!). I was looking at ultra wide angle options for this trip, but I couldn't make a decision and wanted to listen to some of your opinions.

As you read above, I'm on a Seafrogs housing so all the expensive Nauticam stuff won't work for me. I was initially thinking of using my Canon 8-15mm with a 2x converter (as recommended in some of the photography threads and it totally makes sense) and a Tokina converter (since the Sigma one doesn't do AF in video), but then I realized only after "putting all the converters into the cart", especially coming from a photography background, that the fisheye would be really weird / distracting on video! Although, I'm not sure if that's the case with Mantas, Whale Sharks and Nurse Sharks - and the reason I didn't refer to the reef sharks is because I think I will be using my 16-35 for the "reef-hook-dives" since I think some reach will be required there (and here, I'm really open to opinions since I've not been to the Maldives and the last time I went on a reef hook dive was in Tenggol Island in Malaysia looking for whale sharks with the 8-15mm, but it didn't really work since the whale shark was quite far).

That being said, I went on to look for some ultra wide rectilinear lenses, and read some nice reviews from @Phil Rudin (nice articles there!)

So, if I may ask - to shoot large stuff, like mantas, whale sharks, groups of nurse sharks would you recommend:
- Canon 8-15mm fisheye with / without 2x and which lens converter would you recommend (I was going for the Tokina because it was cheaper than Metabones, but not sure about AF speed difference) and not sure how the fisheye effect will play with large stuff.
- Perhaps the best way to shoot video is with rectilinear lenses and if so, I should consider ultra wide angle lenses. And if so, what do you recommend? I was looking at the Laowa 10mm / Laowa 12mm / Sony 12-24 / are there any other lenses to consider?

Thanks all in advance for taking the time!

Editing Software - DaVinci Resolve and Pinnacle Studio

Hi all, I have been using Pinnacle Studio editing software for the entire time that I have been doing underwater videos. It was recommended to me early on for ease of use, and once I got used to it, it was hard to change to anything else with a new learning curve. However, I am now using Studio 26 and apparently it is "end of the line", that is, it has been sold and is unlikely to be updated. So, I have started trying to learn DaVinci Resolve since so many here seem to like it. One really, really nice feature in recent versions of Pinnacle Studio is the "Auto White Balance" and "Auto Tone" check boxes in their color correction menu. They work surprisingly well to get very close to right for most, but not all, of my clips. They make it very fast and easy to do a quick color correction on my clips, so that I can decide which ones to keep and spend more time trimming, and cleaning up, etc. I can't find anything like that in Resolve. I see the color bar sliders, and wheels, etc but nothing "automatic". If I have to manually correct each clip, it will take me forever to edit my most recent trip, since I have 250 video clips to go through.

Does anyone have some good cheats for this, or possibly some good training links that will help me out?

Thanks!

Panasonic S1Rii

Hi, Im looking at putting my S1Rii in a Nauticam housing. Their service was excellent—the lens was promptly delivered to the Dive Into Lembeh Resort, waiting for me upon arrival.

The Problem with Traditional Macro

For too long, I've been frustrated by the limitations of my standard macro setup (Nauticam-Sony FX3-Sony 90mm lens). The experience of missing a shot of a large subject, like a magnificent octopus, because it simply wouldn't fit in the frame was constantly disappointing. Even when shooting small, spectacular critters like nudibranchs or a blue-ring octopus, I often felt constrained by a lack of compositional variety. I needed more space, more context, and a different perspective.

A New Name for a Revolutionary Lens

While the Nauticam MFO-3 delivers incredible results, I believe its name—"Mid-Range Focus Optimizer 3"—is overly technical and confusing. The official descriptions, with their heavy emphasis on blackwater photography, do not adequately capture its true, versatile benefits. Honestly, if I hadn't taken the leap and tried it myself, I would never have understood its immense potential.

If you ask me, this lens should be renamed the Wide Angle Macro Lens (WAML).

Why WAML? Because it perfectly describes its function: it gives you the power to shoot with a wide-angle perspective while keeping your macro setup. While it won't offer full wide-angle capability, it tremendously expands your range of possible subjects and compositional opportunities.

Beyond the Lenses

I own several other Nauticam lenses, including the SMC-2, SMC-3, and MFO-1, but the MFO-3 quickly became the most-used lens on my Lembeh trip. Size is a major consideration so I’m focused on a 5”. Cost is also a consideration. Ideally I am looking in the $2Kish range. $5K is out of the budget.

I’ve looked at the Kraken 5” v2 due to both cost and compact size. Cable failures seem to be an expectation of any monitor, although I am told the new v2 is noticeably better than the original Kraken cable design. I am, however, hearing issues of button failures, which is concerning. This may be from users not cleaning their gear as well as I do, but it is concerning.

One proposed solution is picking up a pre-owned SmallHD 502 Bright monitor (1000 nit) and Nauticam NA-502B housing. Both seem quite solid with pre-owned prices to be around $2500 total. The cables are stronger and the Nauticam buttons are solid. The Nauticam housing has its own vacuum as well. The package size is about that of the Kraken 5”. Battery life with 2 Canon batteries is about 3 hrs. The downside is it is no longer being supported by firmware updates, but probably not an issue as it works well as-is.

The SmallHD 503 Bright is still supported with firmware upgrades, but is substantially thicker and heavier than I prefer. The newer SmallHD monitors/housings are out of the budget for now.

For those with solid monitor experience, what say you???

Thoughts, comments, recommendations?

I am using with a Nauticam Sony a1 rig.
