I am currently using a GoPro 12 with 3 inon wet lens, with tray, floater, and a tripod for shooting macro and video with fixed camera

I am now evaluating what will be my next system, since with the new mission 1 realese with new form factor, and new high price, I am oriented to go on the next level, but I feel overwhelmed a bit by the choice.

I don't have an exact budget yet, but since it's an upgrade on the current one, I start evaluating system from 2500€ and up.

I'd like a suggestion on the camera body, lens option, tray and lights, but mainly I have to decide the camera.

I'd like to keep the GoPro flexibility under water, where I can swap the wet lenses from wide, to macro, to super macro, ( by this I mean I'd like to have a system that allow me to be able to shoot almost everything without the need for example of a lens change inside the housing), to have a good balance between performance and size, without being too heavy to travel.

Also, the size of the setup underwater would ideally be not much bigger than the current one, to allow me to film in small spots.

Action cam will be stuck on top of A1ii, main purpose is to film "everything" in the blue like hammers ect 20-ish meters away, scenery in Indonesia, ect.

Main is cost effectiveness, so camera and "original" housing from the camera maker.

Is wideangle wetlens needed? Or does the additional price justify it for my described use?

The price range and what ChatGPT is suggesting, are all the obvious suspects, GoPro 13 black, Insta360 Ace Pro 2 and DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro. And Inon UFL-G140 ZD.

The prices of this setup is pretty much what im willing to do splash out. Only thing is which one.

The good news is the sharpness at certain focal length is just awesome. Like miles ahead of a 360 Pro dome. All sample screenshots - the active type is yellow in thumbnails names.

The bad news is the seam. I am hoping that there is some work going on with Insta360 and nauticam which would fix the issue but for now the seam is soooo visible and inaccurate. Basically unusable if the shot includes short - medium distance (and that's where sharpness excels the most).

So it seems the main strength of this product are 180 shots for documentary reasons as long as these shots originate on one of two spheres. Just dont even think of having invisible seam for in between footage.

For like wide angle shots without close subject or in another words infinity shots I would say the results are comparable from what I see. Mind you this is a poorly lit pool so we shall see what results are we going to get from reef shots with abundance of light but it could be similar. So no big difference.

and the bad seam for subject 2m away you can judge yourselves...

And lastly another ugly child is the lamp projection. You can see where my lamp was so do your own caculations as to where the housing was when it projected this

So all in all not what I expected from Nauticam. I expected water contact optics - their solution is their own dry optics in a custom shape glass dome. I expected excellent invisible seam due to 190 claimed angle and the seam is quite visible and even at the distance. And for now I leave aside that ugly dome light projection...

So even though the 180 quality is quite good the question which needs to be asked is why would they release such inferior product for a 360 degrees camera. I was expecting they would put their awsome water contact optics on it and not their own version of dry optics in a glass dome...

This ugly child has quite a potential to tarnish otherwise great reputation so in their shoes I would probably take it off the market and come back with something that works rather than keep selling this inferior product further. What do you think?

It looked absolutely gorgeous and as always with Nauticam Housings, super sleek.

It is made from hard-anodized aluminium alloy with a depth rating of 150 metres and as stand with all of their housings, has beautiful easy-to-use controls including a rotary housing lock. Each lens has a 190 degree angle of view and is made up of three elements in two groups. These are coated with anti-reflection material.

However, to be able to use it, the outer lenses of the X5 need to be removed. Don't worry, there is a tool included with the housing.

You may further improve it with an aluminium housing and better and more expensive lights, but it would be overkill. I have an aluminium housing for an older model and the size and weights were more disadvantage then the  added advantages (robustness, better depth rate etc.)

The best thing in this setup is putting the control of the light and the shutter release close to the grip. The AOI lens improves the image quality, but it's a bit problematic to use it under turbid condition.

How does your top GoPro setup look like?

I've uploaded two videos with many footage on my YT channel. The perspective is a bit different but they can be compared. There was a recent thread about the "cinematic" application of action cameras. I think the GoPro is not that bad but I observed many optical errors.

What do you think about the results?

By the way I think it's possible to achieve cinematic quality with action cameras as many footage in big blue chip productions were taken by action cameras. So here is the video I mentioned:

Having in mind performance but easy of use, someone is using INON ucl G55, G100 or G165 lens?

The G55 sounds as the better of them as magnification ratio but has a very small depth of field. I look forward to your suggestions.

@waywardriley I try to tag you, have you tried the tripod in salt water? I saw that you used it only in the pool
Did it rust or had any problem?

I also saw the quad leg stabilization, but for now i think the tripod would better, being able to be folded away when not in use, and also cheaper (for the 5k I found a good used offer, and the 3k leg is around 40€)

From his tests he did not find any substantial differences between the two lenses and the AOI cost about half thr Inon. the slight difference in FOV between the two lenses depends on the GoPro 12's automatic stabilization, which cuts slightly more.

The second video has footage more indicative of lens quality. Although it is in Italian, YouTube does an excellent job of automatically translating the subtitles.

As you can see, the edges are significantly better with the lens. In my experience the difference appears with very close objects.

I believe that both companies would need a marketing consultant ( provided with a baseball bat) attending all meetings where product names are decided.

in one of the videos is visible that the housing is able to use UMG-01 Magnifier lcd viewfinder, and according to the advertise at the show no more vignetting underwater.

Apparently I got two options: stock Inon SD front mask (haven't found a UK dealer yet): doesn't seem to be polarpro compatible nor has its on provisions for filter.

The Backscatter mount, here it says is compatible with Inon SD lenses (should be verified though). Maybe it doesn't work with the polarpro filters but at least I can buy the backscatter filter inserts.

Some time ago I read or saw something on the web saying that under water, the DJI is better than the GoPro. Unfortunately I don't remember why, or where I saw that. Therefore I want to ask here if anybody knows both systems and can make a recommendation. Or any tipps what to consider beyond the cam itself, like what kind of housings are available for each model (to use up to 60m deep), or which offers the better range of attachment lenses and filters.

The last couple years the smartphone market has exploded and manufacturers compete between them to implement the best cameras/sensor in portable devices.
