Like life just can't be simple...

The good news is the sharpness at certain focal length is just awesome. Like miles ahead of a 360 Pro dome. All sample screenshots - the active type is yellow in thumbnails names.

The bad news is the seam. I am hoping that there is some work going on with Insta360 and nauticam which would fix the issue but for now the seam is soooo visible and inaccurate. Basically unusable if the shot includes short - medium distance (and that's where sharpness excels the most).

So it seems the main strength of this product are 180 shots for documentary reasons as long as these shots originate on one of two spheres. Just dont even think of having invisible seam for in between footage.

For like wide angle shots without close subject or in another words infinity shots I would say the results are comparable from what I see. Mind you this is a poorly lit pool so we shall see what results are we going to get from reef shots with abundance of light but it could be similar. So no big difference.

and the bad seam for subject 2m away you can judge yourselves...

And lastly another ugly child is the lamp projection. You can see where my lamp was so do your own caculations as to where the housing was when it projected this

So all in all not what I expected from Nauticam. I expected water contact optics - their solution is their own dry optics in a custom shape glass dome. I expected excellent invisible seam due to 190 claimed angle and the seam is quite visible and even at the distance. And for now I leave aside that ugly dome light projection...

So even though the 180 quality is quite good the question which needs to be asked is why would they release such inferior product for a 360 degrees camera. I was expecting they would put their awsome water contact optics on it and not their own version of dry optics in a glass dome...

This ugly child has quite a potential to tarnish otherwise great reputation so in their shoes I would probably take it off the market and come back with something that works rather than keep selling this inferior product further. What do you think?

Nauticam Launch Insta 360 X5 Housing

I saw this at the recent UK Go Diving Show on the Underwater Visions stand run by Alex Tattersall.

It looked absolutely gorgeous and as always with Nauticam Housings, super sleek.

It is made from hard-anodized aluminium alloy with a depth rating of 150 metres and as stand with all of their housings, has beautiful easy-to-use controls including a rotary housing lock. Each lens has a 190 degree angle of view and is made up of three elements in two groups. Most of the time my GoPro will sit on my larger sony camera setup, but time to time I take a single action camera with lights. Yesterday I tried a new setup with a single GoPro12 with AOI wide lens adapter and two Weefine lights. I think this is the maximum level worth to pimp up your GoPro. It Included:

 GoPro12

 AOI UWL-03

 Divevolk tray with two grips

 2 Weefine Smart Focusd 7000

 Weefine remote control unit

 2 fiber optic cables

 BGNing Trigger rod shutter

 4 floating arms

You may further improve it with an aluminium housing and better and more expensive lights, but it would be overkill. I have an aluminium housing for an older model and the size and weights were more disadvantage then the added advantages (robustness, better depth rate etc.)

The best thing in this setup is putting the control of the light and the shutter release close to the grip. The AOI lens improves the image quality, but it's a bit problematic to use it under turbid condition.

My original plan was to use the Sony camera mainly for macro and have the GoPro setup for wide angle. However, most of the dives were more appropriate for wide scene videography. So I used both camera very similarly, therefore, I produced many similar footage, which is a good opportunity for comparison. I tried to max out both systems. Sony was on XAVC S 4K, 25p 100M, while GoPro was used with GoPro Labs (4K 60p, highest bitrate). You can see the setup below:

I've uploaded two videos with many footage on my YT channel. The perspective is a bit different but they can be compared. There was a recent thread about the "cinematic" application of action cameras. I think the GoPro is not that bad but I observed many optical errors.

<iframe width="200" height="113" src="https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/LAP1aA0L_d0?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; fullscreen" title="Sony A6400 vs GoPro 12 comparison. The YT channel is run by a couple creating mainly travel videos with lots of underwater sequences. The recommendations (use tray, add lights, get closer etc.) are totally appropriate but the underwater video sequences are just not OK and IMHO, and they are far from cinematic, or I just haven't seen that movie. My main problem is that they forced hyperview and the corners are somehow stretched and not sharp. Actually, only the middle segment is usable according to my standard. I left a comment, but in general other comments are positive. So the people are happy with those results. Most of the people will watch YT videos on smartphone, so maybe trying to reach cinematic quality is just overrated or the people's quality expectations are lowered drastically. I'm curious about your opinion. Please, don't leave negative comments on the video on YT, I don't want to bash their channels, so lets rather discuss here, and more as a phenomenon (with this particular example) general.

By the way I think it's possible to achieve cinematic quality with action cameras as many footage in big blue chip productions were taken by action cameras. So here is the video I mentioned:

Macro and close up

Hello everybody, I'm looking at the new Inon's macro/close up wet lens. As in the title, I am searching for a tripod for my setup, for now I am evaluating 2 models from Joby:

1) The 5k model, that can support up to 4 kg and is made of aluminium
Gorillapod 5K Video Pro Kit per Video Professionali | JOBY

2)The 3k model, just the legs, that support up to 3kg but is made of plastic
https://amzn.eu/d/1GGcgNu

I am more oriented on the 5k model, for sturdiness and his bigger weight capacity to be used also on land, but I don't know how well the metal will resist the salt water
For the 3k model, I fear that the less problem from corrosion, are balanced with a lighter construction and so easier to break

Someone have used them underwater?
I saw only this post on the forum, and not much more online, about using them underwater:

I saw that you used it only in the pool
Did it rust or had any problem?

My setup look like this, and I would add the tripod on the bottom:

I also saw the quad leg stabilization, but for now i think the tripod would better, being able to be folded away when not in use, and also cheaper (for the 5k I found a good used offer, and the 3k leg is around 40€)

From his tests he did not find any substantial differences between the two lenses and the AOI cost about half thr Inon. the slight difference in FOV between the two lenses depends on the GoPro 12's automatic stabilization, which cuts slightly more.

The second video has footage more indicative of lens quality. Although it is in Italian, YouTube does an excellent job of automatically translating the subtitles.

Until now I used the Sony for video, too, but filming (in 4K!) drains its battery so fast that it sometimes didn't last till the end of the dive. Also, I would like to have a wider angle for filming, at least occasionally. I want to mount the action cam on top of the Nauticam housing so that I can take photos while shooting video.

Some time ago I read or saw something on the web saying that under water, the DJI is better than the GoPro. Unfortunately I don't remember why, or where I saw that. Therefore I want to ask here if anybody knows both systems and can make a recommendation. Or any tipps what to consider beyond the cam itself, like what kind of housings are available for each model (to use up to 60m deep), or which offers the better range of attachment lenses and filters.

Best Smartphone for underwater Video, Photo & Macro (2025)

The last couple years the smartphone market has exploded and manufacturers compete between them to implement the best cameras/sensor in portable devices.

With the recent implementation of easy to use underwater cases it's a new era for underwater photography and filming.

Lets try to understand whats the best feature a smartphone camera can have for underwater use, together with the best app for video & Photography.

In Random order in terms of importance for underwater we should look for:

 Stabilisation

Image quality (Noise, Texture, exposure, color, artifacts)

 Field of View

 Slow Motion

 RAW files output

 Zoom

 AI integration

 Auto Focus

 Bonus Feature (underwater mode)
