About Me

About Me:

Hi!  I’m Kate Jonker, an underwater photographer, freelance writer and underwater photography mentor based in Gordon’s Bay, just outside Cape Town, South Africa.

As a child, I grew up on the beach and spent many hours snorkelling, fascinated by the colourful fish and tiny shrimps that flitted beneath the waves, so learning to scuba dive was a natural progression for me. When my husband and I opened Indigo Scuba, our scuba diving business in 2008, I started taking photos to promote the incredible marine life we have here in Gordon’s Bay. Underwater photography soon became an obsession!

My passion lies with sharing the beauty of our oceans through photography and storytelling. I also love helping other divers advance in their underwater photography and offer Zoom coaching sessions and image reviews, as well as teaching them how to use their cameras to capture beautiful images beneath the waves.

I am a proud Ambassador for the Marelux brand of underwater photography equipment and use a Canon R5 mirrorless camera which I use inside a Marelux MX-R5 housing. I use Supe D-Pro strobes. My go-to lenses are the Canon EF-100mm macro lense and the Canon EF 8-15 circular fisheye lense as well as some fun vintage lenses that I love to experiment with.

Macro photography has a special place in my heart, and I love capturing the quirky characters of the tiny and vibrant marine life and tiny critters such as nudibranchs that call our reefs their home.

I’m a contributor to numerous underwater photography and diving magazines and I regularly serve as a judge in international underwater photography competitions. I am a qualified dive boat skipper and professional dive guide for Indigo Scuba which my husband and I own in Gordon’s Bay.
