Are you talking about diving on the main island or on one of the outer islands?
We dove quite a bit off the main island, and it was good. The Diving and accomodations were reasonable and comfortable. None of the places we stayed had a/c, nor did we need it.
We also did a lot of diving off the island of Kandavu. It is the second largest and least populated island in the chain. The diving was phenomenal! More expensive, but, well worth it.

Take a look at Wananavu resort near Raki Raki. They have a marina and are affiliated with Kai Viti Divers. Diving this area is IMO the best in Fiji.

If you are looking to do "something nice for a change" then go to one of the outer islands. The diving and accomodations tend to be much nicer. Have fun, i'm jealous...

Garden Isle on Taveuni is my pick, rooms not luxurious; but large and comfortable, and have air conditoning. All rooms face the water and the sun does come in the afternoon; but you have drapes and air conditioning. They have a pool. Not lots to do for a non-diver unless they like relaxing and using the pool.
Love the diving and it is very reasonable. Aquatrek runs the diving operation there and it is top notch.

I agree w/ Terry that Garden Isle is a nice uncomplicated place to stay. But I've been to Taveuni two times since 1998 and the diving there has really gone downhill. There is MUCH better diving in Fiji than the Rainbow Reef, which is sad, because it used to be so great.

We did some phenomenal diving on Kandavu...We dove with Dive Kandavu and they were great. The island is beautiful, but, very remote.
