Hermit crab housing?

Is this the type of crab who adopts its living quarters and if does anyone know what this one has adopted? The picture was taken off the coast of British Columbia if that helps.

Thanks in advance ... Tim

Certainly looks like a Hermit Crab, i would think thats a sponge but not positive.

Cool shot though

This is a wide hand hermit, Elassochirus tenuimanus. Another hermit, Pagurus stevensae, usually wears a sponge. Seems this guy evicted Mr. Stevens for his lovely digs.

Cheers,

Marli

As Mike suggested it's a hermit crab, Elassochirus tenuimanus and the shell is covered by a sponge.

Thanks to both of you for a quick response.
