Sync cord connector flood, Nikonos

  1. I had been very lucky... then I tried to rig up a modeling light, attaching a flashlight to my sync cord and bulkhead connector on my Aquatica housing for my Coolpix 5000. First, let me say that this has been a wonderful set up, and this has nothing to do with Aquatica.

So, I noticed that my flash does not fire, then I noticed that my connector was not really tight where the sync cord screws on to the housing. Hmmm right where my flashlight is swinging around - DOH!

Now, I'm diving in fresh water, so I wonder if I might get lucky. I let everything dry and try to clean out the tiny little connectors, carefully. No luck. I test the strobe - still fires - using slave mode - of course camera has to be out of the housing for this to work, but at lease I know the strobe is still good.

So, I don't know if it's the bulkhead connector or the sync cord or both. I don't have another sync cord to test.

Another post talked about removing the leads yourself but there is epoxy where the 5? pin flat cord enters the bottom of the housing.

Is there anything else I can do? Is there any hope? What do you think I need to replace - the cord or the bulkhead connector?

Thanks - you folks are the best.

  2. If you intend to take any dive trips, then you should replace the cord and send in the housing to have the bulkhead and wiring replaced. There is nothing more frustrating than being on a $5,000 dive trip and you can't get your flash to fire reliably, or it just KEEPS firing by itself...

    Cheers

    James

  3. Totally sage advice. We scrimp so hard to afford our hobby, that it's easy to be penny wise and and pound foolish.

    Thanks,

    Beth

  4. And don't attach anything to the bulkhead or sync cord in the future. They can be so fragile at times.

Going from memory when I had my Aquatica A5000 but is there not a recessed hole on the top to screw in a focus light holder? I'm pretty sure there is. You should purchase the TLC or like piece and attach your focus light to it. Also will add flexibility to adjust the spotting light and hold it relatively secure. :D
