MiMic for critic

Hi! First, welcome to the forum! I have mixed feelings about this shot. I like the expression and the position of the eyes a lot, but I think the out-of-focus tentacles in the foreground are a bit distracting. Still a great shot!

I have a question. Was this taken when the mimic was free swimming? Or did you take it from the top while it moved along the bottom?

Good question, was the octopus harassed in order to take this shot? Usually this is what they look like:

well, thanks for the welcome.. this mimic was jetting out of it's hole and when it saw me, it jetted upwards towards surface, so i followed it and anticipated it's next move.. which happens to be in a defensive mode.. hence the shot.. about the blurrness.. i feel it creates a bit more depth, giving a bit of bakground and foregroud feel.. well at least i got the eyes.. hehehe.. the mimic was not manhandled and yes it's quite often you do see them on the ground and i guess mine was one of those rare moments. Great shooting, way to seize the moment imp. The shot has a "coolness" factor, but I would like to see a composition that isn't so tight on the Octo.
Welcome to Wetpixel.

I have to agree with Rocha. I really like the shot but feel the foreground tenticle is distracting to the shot. It istill is a great shot, I just think that would make it even better.

Kind of a late post but I thought this was really unique, it seem very cropped, I think I would have pulled back the cropping to get more of the Webbing area in. I don't think a non diver would know what this picture is and that hurts it. Seeing more of it would let people know it is an Octopus. I love the foreground tenticle I think it frames the head and lead you to it. Opening up the crop would help frame even more with a tenticle on the right. Very cool pic though. Don't we all have so many really good shots that just seem to miss that elusive something to make it great?
