Oly 7070 flash in super macro help

7 posts
  1. I have an oly 7070 in an olympus pt-27 housing. I'm using Ikelite DS-50's with ev controllers, so they are "slaves" to the internal flash. I have not been able to find a way to get the internal flash, and therefore the external flashes, to fire when in super macro mode. If anyone out there has found a way to do this, I'd appreciate hearing from you.

    Thanks,

    Steve

  2. I own both a 5060 and 7070. It seems you cannot do this with the 7070, but you can with the 5060. I haven't learned the 7070 to 100% yet...

    Get one of these!

  3. I don't own a 7070, but I've used a 5060 and found a way around the problem. I think it should also work with the 7070, as I've found a similar solution on another forum:

First turn the focus to AF, next change the camera flash setting to slave, then set to say 2, now make sure your in manual mode (M) and change the focus to supermacro, take a shot and the strobe will fire!

    Good luck,

    Mat

  4. Thanks for the response. Followed your instructions to the letter and could not get the 7070 to fire flash in super macro...... AAaggghhhgh

  5. This looks like a bug!

With the 5060 there is no problem - there is nothing to work around.

The 7070 can also be set to Slave & ON (Slow) when in super macro mode. The only difference is that the strobe doesn't fire.

From the 7070 manual: "During super macro shooting, the built-in flash is not available. You can use an external flash, but vignetting may occur."

I guess the bug is in the gui/meny system...

  6. Our 7070 does not allow use of the internal flash in super macro, even with the slave mode. We wonder if Olympus intended it to work that way or if it really is a bug. The other cameras, like the 5050 and 8080, do let you use the slave mode in super macro. They could have done that on purpose if they wanted to force people to buy external flashes?

Ikelite housing DOES allow TTL in super macro with DS-50 and DS-125 SubStrobes............

  7. My advice would be to but Mathias Heinrich adapter to convert the flash bulkhead to a nikonos bulkhead. Buy a second hand YS60/90/120 or nikon SB105 and hey presto, you just set your cameras settings to fire external flash only and you get TTL with your newly aquired gun! I know this coz i've done it.
