Oly housing with an oly flash and housing

  1. I'm new to the underwater world so my first rig had one thing in mind...cheap. I'm sure that's a mistake a lot of newbies make and then later have to pay for something more rugged and just better. I was curious if anyone has used their olympus 5050 or 7070 with an olympus flash and housing instead of a strobe. Just curious what your thoughts are on such a setup. Thanks!

  2. HI there

I don't use this set up but i have had many guests who have. The strobe is nice because it gives TTL. HOwever, and this is a big however, it is an extremely limited strobe. It is only good for macro, the power is very small and almost useless for WA. It is a very narrow beam too. I would avoid the strobe and get an Ikelite one instead. Go for the DS 125 as you will want it eventually.

THe camera is good but the OLY case is a little cheap i think. You have to be very careful with it as the latches that hold the WA port are very fragile. Again, i would go with the Ikelite for this camera as opposed to the Oly case.

But that is just my opinion.... ;)

  3. Mucho thanks Mike,

Had I found this site before I ordered, I might have saved some money!

  4. One option would be to get the replacement bulkhead from Matthias/Mike

There are quite a few people using this.

You would then have a Nikonos type connection and could use a strobe such as the Inon D2000W. This would still give you TLL without having to scrap your current housing.

And although the Oly flash may not be great for underwater having a top side flash is nice.

  5. Thanks Allen,

Yes...I was trying to kill two birds with one stone with a top side flash that you could take down under. If anything the Olympus Flash housing will provide excellent protection from the weather and elements. This bulkhead replacement intrigues me. I'll visit the site above and check it out. Thanks,

    Gary

  6. if interested you could buy my 8080 rig used on 2 trips. I am upgrding to a dslr. The fl-20 flash works fine for macro but is a little weak for distance, a second slave solves the problem. olympus was supposed to make a housing for their fl-36 flas, but I haven't seen it.

  7. Thanks Doc but I just sprung for the new Olympus SP-350. I like the camera. I think a second strobe might just do the trick.

  8. look at inon as a slave
