I found something strangely familiar about cover #3. If that's not David Doubiliet's circling barracudas (taken circa mid-80's) it is an exact copy of it, and this has to be one of the most published underwater photos ever... I know it is an awesome photo, but I am sure it has been in many covers before, why would they even consider it?

Here is what I mean, compare shot #3 to the cover of Nat Geo march 2001:
Yep that very much could be. David is a big contributor at Sport Diver...i think time for the old guard to move on....
Doug is running a close second at the moment. It seems there are still plenty of people who either haven't seen DD's picture or still prefer it over other offerings...
Nothing against the barracudas or DD for that matter, but this photo has been published so much! And it is from the mid 80's! It's been on the cover of Nat Geo, I think you should retire a photo after that!
It is not like an excellent photo that has been in a few covers but was taken only like a couple of years ago, I am perfectly fine with that.
BTW, Doug's photo is first now, but only by 0.2% or something like that.
It seems that the majority of voters like the "old" photo - it's in the lead for votes.
I voted before I read this thread, but a chick in a bikini doesn't do it for me - I, too, voted for the "old" photo simply because I found it appealing.
Chick in the Bikini got my vote. Amazing concentration to capture that shot. A repeat cover just wouldn't be right. And, if he is a mate of my Canadian friend then I got to support him!
Where do people get those masks though?
i hate to be an old crumugeon, but I keep seeing the same old photos on covers in contests, and in publications. Its getting boring. Lets get out of this rut. There are many new and creative ideas. Lets start rewarding them more

the lead is slightly bigger now... B)
Hey, excellent to hear. Would be great if he wins. His first major US mag cover...
I voted for Doug also.
But I'm expecting for return: the frame here in acceptable size
would that be without the jellyfish?
Hey hey!!!
Evidently he got the cover, just got word that it is out now...
Cool
Congrats to Doug, What about the full size version here? B)
