Strobe suitable for Canon Digital Ixus 750 /SD550

  1. Hi, this is my first post on the forum so please help me out!

I have been looking at entering the world of Underwater Photography for a while now, and although I am not ready to spend big money on equipment for my EOS 20D, I have purchased an Underwater housing for my partners Canon ixus 750. I now need help in deciding what the options are regarding strobes that are compatible with this camera. In an ideal world I would like to purchase a strobe that would be compatible with both the ixus 750 and the eos 20D.....but I guess this may be impractical / impossible..

I am looking to purchase a strobe that will be capable of giving me good results in the waters of the Red Sea at depths of up to 40m.

Advice would be greatly appreciated as would details of UK vendors that I could contact to make the purchase!

Thanks in anticipation of your help!

  2. There are a few options available that fit your description:

    1) Ikelite DS50 with manual controller or TTL controller(US$650 inlcluding arm)

    2) Inon D2000W (approx. US$600)

    3) Epoque 230DS (US$350)

    4) Sea&Sea YS90DX (approx. US$600)

All of these can be used with your Ixus and a fibre optical cord. They could also be used later with your 20D and an actual sync cord.

Guide number (power) is approximately the same for all of these strobes, but other key considerations come into play, including recycle time (the faster the better, obviously), angle of coverage (may not be critical now, but will be if you decide to shoot wide angle), and overall dimensions and weight.

You can check out this site for more details:

As for advice on where to buy these, I'll leave this to UK-based members.

    Cheers,

    Mat

  3. I have the S&S YS-25 with my wife Canon S50.

It is a small strobe but it's quit good for macro, and surprising I had also a success with it and an external WA lens that give me 100-105 degrees angle.

I can recommend a very good shop in London (at list from my experience):cameras underwater
