YS 15 strobe AUTO

  1. I am about to purchase a YS 15 strobe which I would like to use as a slave strobe complimenting my existing macro setup. My question is; does the AUTO function mean that if I had a larger strobe connected set on half power, will the YS15 fire at the same power setting as the larger connected strobe. or if I had the connected strobe set on TTL will the YS 15 fire at the same power as the connected strobe?

  2. Hi Westfax,

I don't have specific experience with this strobe, so this is just a guess. Hopefully someone else will jump in.

Sea and Sea Auto strobes use a sensor to "quench" the light they provide. Usually the user sets the f-stop and the strobe does the rest.

This is not the same as a TTL strobe, or a TTL slave strobe. When you say "will the YS 15 fire at the same power as the connected strobe?" that would be a TTL slave strobe like the YS30.

Also, the YS15 will not necessarily fire at the same power setting as your main strobe because it may not be as big.

Generally these "Auto" type strobes are best used as the main light source, tripped by an on-camera flash

    Cheers

  3. Hi Westfax,

I think a better option for you would be the Sea&Sea YS-30II TTL DUO strobe. It is still a compact strobe but it is designed to work as a cordless TTL slave or just as a slave. The YS-30II also has a higher guide number and a slightly larger beam angle.

The YS-15AUTO has the built in light sensor that works as James described and was designed to be a primary light source for point and shoot digital cameras. You will get more consistent lighting from the YS-30II TTL.
