Accessories with the Nikon S3

  1. I had the chance to play with some accessories I want to use on my Nikon S3 today, although it is such a tiny housing it seems a pit to bolt anything on to it!

I really like the INON UW fisheye lens - the UWF 165. It is much wider than the UWL and I was pleased that the camera works with this - i.e. does not see the sides of the UFL lens (on land). Here is a test shot taken through it (it is not in focus as the lens is an UW optic, and sorry about my hand being in the shot - I was just holding it in place).

I don't think that INON make a mount for this lens for this housing (WP-CP5). Does anyone know different? I know they make them for the WP-CP1, CP2 and CP4. Anyway it doesn't look to hard to modify one.

I also tried the Magic Filter with the Nikon S3. One of the reasons I got the S3 was that the manual WB was good and just as important easy to set. Fixing the Magic Filter was ridiculously easy. Just a piece of tape was needed to hold it in place, and I was pleased that the camera's WB could counteract this strong filter in doors, meaning that I should be able to use the filter from the surface down to 15m underwater to help colours.

It really is a great benefit having a camera with an internal zoom lens.

  2. Inon does not currently have a mount for the WP-CP5. I called and spoke to someone there. He's going to have the tech guy call me back.

  3. Thanks, really useful info. I am very interested in hearing of any off the shelf solution.

  4. The tech guy at Inon called back. New product announcements will probably be made in Japan in February. Until then, he said that you could try making your own mount, or modifying an AD mount onto the housing. I hope you're good at measuring. :D

Quick question about using WB with JPG only digicams. Would you recommend using a gray card, or maby setting WB automatically?

  5. With this camera, with the filter fitted on land, I was able to WB of a Neutral coloured Epson printer(!) without any problem.

Underwater I am not sure. I will try first without a grey card, and then use one if I need too. I'll report back.
