Barred Hamlets

  1. I've been shooting these for a while now, but why is it that these, the most common Hamlets always get into the best poses.. ;) I wasn't going out to shoot these but thought I would when I saw them. Cropped it close so you can get a better look.

  2. Very Nice shot. You can't pass up an opportunity like that just because it was not on the itinerary.

  3. good shot Patrick ... Alex and I will probably agree with you those damn barred hamlets always put on the best show even if you are after soemthign more colourfull ;)

  4. Yeah, that's really nice. Also the delicate blues of barred hamlets are very pretty.

I think the hamlet spawning looks best when the male fish is closest to the camera. As I said in my recent uwp article I try "to focus the camera on the male fish, which shows much more emotion and personality during spawning. The acting female, by comparison, looks pretty vacant throughout! It is something that I have learned in shooting a lot of fish behaviour is that my most popular images always have a strong element of emotion or personality. Even if is not really there – I try and imply it"

  6. Very nice shot! I know how hard it is to get a good shot like this, it took me five dives to get a similar one of indigo hamlets in Belize.

  7. Any kind of behavior like that is a winning photograph - looks great. You can use the shadow/highlight feature of photoshop CS to tweak the bright area on the lower Hamlet and balance the one about.

  8. good tip on the highlights, thanks, made it better.

  9. Good pic.

    How big are these fish?

  10. I would say this pic is life-like in size.

  11. That depends on your monitor size and resolution!

According to fishbase they grow up to 15cm or 6 inches. The biggest being the indigo hamlet. Most are around 10cm (4 inches).
