dual strobe setup for wide angle

  1. Quick question. I am planning to get a DS200 (probably for not good reason but since it is there..... ;) ).

Anyhow, both DS125 and DS200 has the same color temperature so mixing them for macro is not a problem since I generally won't have 2 strobes at the same power level anyhow.

However, would this be a problem for wide angle shots? I assume that you would need more even lighting spreadout over the entire frame for closeup wide angle type shots.

Does anyone have any experience with using 2 different strobes for wide angle? Is it a big deal?

I would love to get 2 DS200 but have not really been a good boy this year so Santa only allows one ;)

  2. When I shoot a wide angle, dual strobe shot on a wall....

The strobe closest to the wall tends to over-expose the wall.

So, put the big strobe away from the wall, and the weaker strobe closer to the wall.

I am not very experienced actually.

    YMMV

  3. Hi Boi,

I use 1 x S200 and 1 x DS125 for wide angle. You do have to be careful if you want to achieve uniform light over a large subject, but generally speaking, it's not a problem. I normally try to aim the S200 further than the DS125, and that gives good results.

    Cheers,

    Mat

  4. What these folks have said holds very true.

You basically have to know your strobes. If one is 2x as powerful then that means it is ONE STOP more powerful. Since water "absorbs" about one stop per foot, you will generally need to adjust the more powerful one, or else pull it back a foot.

If you're on a wall, put the weaker strobe toward the wall, and then set your strobe powers accordingly.

If you want even lighting, keep in mind that if you set the SS200 to 1/2 power, it will be roughly the same as the DS125.

    Cheers

    James

  5. Thanks for all the input. As I understand it from Ikelite site, because the DS200 dispersion pattern is already wide so it does not come with diffuser.

In that case, would the DS125 at full power (with diffuser on) be roughly the same as DS200 (without diffuser) at 1/4 power?

I hope the color temperature would not change too much with diffuser also.

edit: opps, nevermind, just read Ikelite page a bit more carefully, there is an optional diffuser for the DS200 afterall, so as james said, full power DS125 = 1/2 power DS200.
