I'm leaving for Costa Rica this weekend and I'm trying to decide which of my lenses is best suited for diving the NW (Pacific) coast. I've heard visibility is pretty poor so I wonder if I should just use my EF-S 60mm macro or will there be a use for my EF-S 17-85mm?

Macro or WA for Costa Rica trip?

I would take both just in case. The visibility is usually bad, but sometimes it can be good. All my good photos from Panama (next country down) are macro. I tried wide angle many times, but ended up changing lens just before the dive due to bad vis.

I'm going to bring both. But, I'm only going to dive one or two days so I wanted to know what I should start with. I may only get two dives in so I want to maximize my chance at getting some good photos. I'd hate to start with the WA only to learn it was a complete waste of one of my (potentially) two dives.

Take the macro, although I would take a longer one. Take a look at my Panama gallery below, should be very similar:

All photos with the 105 macro.

Thanks Luiz!
I'll start with the macro.

When I dove out of Tamarindo back in 2000, the viz was about 10'. But what a spectacle within those 10 feet! Huge schools of grunts, eagle and manta rays galore, etc.
One thing I noticed is that the rocks are covered w/ barnacle shells, and these shells are TEEMING with beautiful tiny blennies. Great for macro photos.
Cheers

Sorry, I'm a nubie - can I shoot the rays with the 60mm Macro? BTW, I'm suprised you can see rays from 10'. They must swim pretty dang close!
