Pelican case

  1. I know there are a number of discussions floating around about pelicans, but I wanted to check about what size I would need to fit my gear.

    I carry:

Aquatica D100, dual Ike DS125s, 4"-8"-4" TLC arms (2), 8" dome port, macro port, plus zoom gears and sync chords.

Currently I take my computer, camera and lenses in a carryon and check all the underwater gear mentioned above in a Pelica 1600 with foam.

Can I fit this gear into the 1510 or 1550 with the padded dividers? I would sleep easier if I could carry-on everything.

It would be great to see a picture or two of a configuration that fits it (or a similar set up) in...

    Thanks!

Also, I just returned from Provo, and my pelican arrived with one lock in tact and the other one completely missing.... curious.

  2. I doubt you'll get that all into a 1510 with padded dividers (which is what I use). The 8" dome would, I suspect, be a problem.

I can fit into a 1510: a Subal D10 housing (with grips removed), a port for the 105mm lens, a 105mm lens, two Inon 220s, two sets of Ultralight arms, two sync cords, a 20 and 50mm extension rings and two zoom rings - plus the usual grease and bits and bobs. Picture attached

I can't get the 8" dome into the 1510 and pack it in a Pelican 1400 which goes in my dive bag. I figure if my dive bag doesn't turn up, as actually happened a couple of weeks ago, I can at least rent gear and dive taking macro pics until my gear and dome port turn up. And, lo, so it came to pass.......

Cameras and lenses go in a Tamrac Cyber6 on my back. The 1510 comes in the cabin with me...... we make a fine couple rolling down the aisle B)

  3. So...

would it be feasible to fit into the 1510 with padded dividers..

the Aquatica D100 housing (with arms off)

    2 Ike DS125 strobes

    2 4-8-4 TLC arms

    ?

Also does the 8" dome port fit nicely into the 1400? do you use the foam or dividers?

  4. Hi Roger

I don't have those bits of equipment so can't be certain. I know the DS125s are bigger than the Inons; and I don't know how the Aquatica compares in size to the Subal. But there is a good chance that all you list will fit.

I would suggest you draw the internal size of the Pelican 1510 on a sheet of paper and then play around with your various bits of equipment to see if they will fit. Allow a little spare for the dividers - each velcro-fitted "arm" coming off the central divider is about 1/4" thick. I would suggest too especially checking the height of the housing carefully against the height the 1510 can handle. The Subal housing just fits.

Your 8" dome should be ok. The Subal DP-FE2 fits comfortably into the cubed-foam 1400. And I pack 8 AA battteries in a batttery container in it as well. But drawing the internal dimensions of the case and seeing if the port will fit is the way to go.

  5. I sow that the 1510 weight's is 15.9 lbs, so it’s very close to the most airlines weight limit.

Most of the times it’s not a big issue, but at list one time I had some problems with overweight of my carry-on.

Did others here had this problem or it's just me? :)

  6. Yeah, I've had that for sure. My Pelican weighs in at about 12kgs and my camera bag at 10. I have had the airline check-in staff weigh them once and mutter about them being overweight for cabin bags. But, so far at least, my smooth British charm has talked them through.....

  7. Thank's, so I think I'll have to find another solution since I don't have that smooth British charm :)

Actually I'm thinking to use a very light carry-on I have and put padded dividers inside to protect my equipment, since it's come with me all the time I think I won't need the extra protection of the Pelican.

I looking now for a padded dividers or something that I can use for that purpose.
