Zoom Gear Sizes please

Hi All

Could anyone please supply the following information for me please

I'm trying to get a Zoom Gear for the Tokina 12-24mm working in my Sea & Sea housing.

If anyone has an ikelite 5509.28 gear sleeve could you pass on the following diamensions please

External OD - Internal OD - amount of teeth on the sleeve external - size of teeth on the sleeve.

or if anyone is using a 17-40mm Sea & Sea gear the INTERNAL OD of that please.

its a real pitty S&S cant be bothered to make a gears for some of the new excellent lenses out there, I did contact them a while ago and was told that we would have some on the shelves. But it appears they have changed their minds and now say they have NO plans to produce.. Boooooo for sea & sea...

I don't think the Sea and Sea gear for the 17-40 will fit. My Seacam gear for the 17-40 fits over my Tokina 12-24, however, it has a cutout so that it is "C" shaped. Because of this, I can stretch it open just a bit and it will fit over. If the Sea and Sea gear is a full 360 ring, then it probably won't fit over...perhaps if you take off the rubber ring from the Tokina lens...

The Sea & Sea 17-40 gear won't fit, I just tried putting it on.

The Ikelite system is built in such a way that it is impossible to measure the diameters you request.

I made a zoom gear for a Sea & Sea customer by adding rubber pads to an Aquatica 12-24 zoom gear. it seems to be working well for them...

The Aquatica gear is easier to work with, since the teeth of the gear run its entire length, alignment is less critical.

Unfortunately for me, Ryan wasn't quite so inventive when I called him with the same problem last year . I ended up getting Ryan to send me a spare ring for the Canon 100mm macro lens (which has a much larger diameter) and lining the inside with foam carpet tape. Works just fine, though I'll agree with Ryan that if the teeth went the whole length of the thing it would be easier to align. Also have to be careful putting the lens in and out of the housing -- As you , no doubt, have noticed, Tokinas have a "push/pull" style ring that switches between auto and manual focus so you need to make sure you don't accidentally reposition the ring when installing the camera and/or lens . . .

I love these zoom ring modification threads

Like many others I seem to always be trying to use varying lenses underwater.......But sometimes I wonder if I should just "set it and forget it" and zoom with my fins. Or use a fixed focal length lens and force myself to find that size critter and / or get closer to fill the frame (???)

Oh well, it seems like these suggestions will solve Craig's problem

I'm quite ready to doctor with foam tape any dam ring i can get to fit..., I even thought of cutting my 18-70 ring in half and clamping that around the zoom ring of the 12-24mm its must work.....IT WILL WORK

Good idea. For my Sigma 12-24 I took an Ikelite zoom gear and cut it so it would open like a "C" Then I put it over my lens and secured it with a rubber band wrapped around the smooth part of the gear. Just because I was born lucky the gear meshes up perfectly with the zoom cogs in my Seacam housing.

It's worth a try w/ your housing. Good luck!

Exactly , Thats why i wanted the External OD of the teeth of a Ikelike zoom gear,If its around 87mm it will work, the teeth need to be approx 2mm high and there is 85 of them.

i've been given the number of a plastic gear manufacturer here in the Uk by Mark Webster and they are most helpful its only $6 for a gear that i hope i can get to work if all else fails.

i think i will order an ikelite gear and hope for the best
