Canon 5D Sigma15mm Sample

  1. Amigos,

See sample taken with a Canon 5D and Sigma 15mm lens which is a full frame fisheye once again on the Canon 5D thanks to it's sensor.

Single Ikelite DS125 strobe and the shortest Ikelite port extension behind their new 8" dome port. Shows no vignetting (yippee!) T use this combination you need to install their new "low profile" port locks and follow mounting instructions for port orientation.

    More samples to come....

  2. Looking good, David!

  3. So David, are you going to be able to bring your self to return the 5D and go back to shooting with your xt?

  4. Alex,

Thanks for the kind words. (Will you be adding some of the Canon 5D MF shots to your site soon?)

    William,

The Canon 5D is a spectacular tool. I may, note I said, MAY, buy one  The feel and speed of the camera, big review screen and especially the viewfinder is something I really enjoyed using above and below.

But in scrolling through my numerous images from the Coral Sea I would catch myself being happy with a photo, then looking at the EXIF data to find it was taken with my lowly little Rebel XT! Plus the Sigma 15mm lens on a 1.6X crop sensor is one fine set up.....

One thing I worked very hard on this trip, even with the supposedly terrible viewfinder of the 1.6X crop Canon cameras was framing. I use a black silicone Sherwood Magnum / TUSA Liberator style mask. Not the lowest volume mask out there, but my eyes are pretty close to the glass. Using the Ikelite SuperEye viewfinder to frame, I still don't see what everyone bitches about......I have cropped very few of my images from this trip as a result.

If anyone who has Canon glass or NO glass was thinking of getting a pro capable dSLR, I'd highly recommend the Canon 5D.

Here's another sample.....Pardon the subject

  5. Hey David -

For me it is not the framing but the ability to discern critical focus with larger viewfinders. THis may not be a big deal for the WA images you've posted here, but put a teleconverter and a diopter on a 100 macro and you'll understand.

I know, rehashed old topic. But you started it :-)

  6. Hey Kasey,

Yes, for macro and super close tele-macro I guess every little bit of viewfinder advantage is important. I haven't been much of even a "mid-size" fish shooter the past few years, much less seriously working on macro images.

When I did shoot macro I used center point AF (which on most SLR and now dSLR cameras has more X and Y sensitivity) and concentrated on filling the frame, isolating a main subject from distracting backgrounds. These days you have to consider negative space for text, banners for verticals, your calendar needs that you are familiar with, etc. So being able to see edge to edge on macro has become a prime consideration for many shooters as posted here by many.

Maybe I'm just getting so used to my Rebel XT viewfinder that I'VE ADAPTED and thus seem to be getting the framing I want right away. Practice makes perfect!

    Anyway, stay in touch!

  7. David,

That looks awesome. Do you have any macro shots to share with the 5D?

    Joe

  8. Joe,

I disn't get a chance to use a dedicated macro lens this trip on the Canon 5D. I tried my brother's Canon 50mm F1.4 and a Ryan's Diopter" attachment to get closer with that lens. The fast F1.4 lens focused super fast on the 5D.

    Here's a sample.

  10. That looks good. When you do get a chance to shoot a dedicated macro, I'd love to see some higher resolution output. Thank you for sharing.
