Ikelite 300 and Ikelite Coolpix 4500 Housing

  1. I was told on Scubaboard that I might be able to get a Ikelite 300 to work with the Ikelite housing for the Nikon Coolpix 4500. This site was referenced as having a custom adapter that could make the two work. Since I can't read the site, does anyone here have any knowledge of this adapter? Would it work with my setup? If it would work, how well would it work? Is this adapter seen as kludgy or would you just opt for a Substrobe 200 which would work without any mods.

My subjects will be wrecks and people (so mostly at distance) in order to document my historic dives.

    Thanks,

    Richard

  2. The substrobe 200 and 300 both operate the same way, so if the 200 will work, the 300 will too.

You can buy an Ikelite TTL slave sensor for your strobe, and if the Coolpix model you are using doesn't incorporate a preflash, then the strobe will work. The Ikelite TTL sensor is about $75 I think.

You'll need to find out if your camera uses preflashes. If it does, then you'll need a different strobe (one that cycles faster) and a digital adapter by Ikelite or Matthias Heinrichs.

  3. Why can't PacketSniffer read the site? We hear occasional reports from people outside the continental United States that can not reach the Ikelite.com web site. I would appreciate an e-mail to <ike@ikelite.com> if you experience such a problem.

http://www.ikelite.com/web_pages/cp4500.html indicates the old 300 should attach with a sync cord and work TTL, but may need to be modified since it was made before 6/1/01.

  4. Aha, a corded connection - even better! Thanks for catching my slip-up Ike.

I used an Ikelite housing for the Coolpix 50000 with a sync cord to a large strobe and it worked quite well.

    Cheers

    James

  5. The 300 is a very fine strobe, but one large animal. PacketSniffer will know the definition of "large" if he uses it.
