  1. I just got back from a week in Bonaire at a Medicine of Diving seminar. Education in the mornings followed by diving in the afternoons and evenings. Can't beat it!

Here are a few of the photos from the trip:

  2. I like all the colors in the skin in the puffer! What camera setup were you using?

  3. They were all taken with a Digital Rebel using either the stock 18-55mm lens or a 100mm macro with dual Sea & Sea YS-120 strobes.

  4. Doug you have a tough life!!!

Love the stars in the Puffer eye....sweet!

  5. Thanks, Mike. Though diving every day in Yap looks pretty good too!

  6. Mike still goes diving everyday ?

I also like all 4 photos as they are some of my fave subjects ... here in the caribbean I guess they are some regular good subjects that aren't always so easy to get. That makes it even harder to get nice shots as they all try to hide so well ... always love lizard fish faces .. they look mean.

  7. The lizardfish is my favourite too. I think that the light from your strobe is slightly behind the subject, though, leaving the background too bright and the face of the lizardfish slightly in the shade.

  8. Nice way to spend a week conducting business B)

  9. Alex -- thanks for your critique. I think you're exactly right. Not something I thought about when I was taking the photo, but something I'll think about next time. Thanks!

Joe -- yes, it was a great way to spend a "tax write-off"!!! However, I was on the faculty and had to give seven lectures so it wasn't ALL fun and games!

  10. Along with what Alex pointed out, in just about any kind of picture UW or land the brightest spot in the picture is where your eye will go first. I like all the pics, your composition is just great on all of them.

The last one with the shrimp you usually don't want to center the subject right in the middle you can crop in many different ways, I cropped out the strobe light comming from the right side where it was the brightest. You can play with it.

Of course it is best to nail a pic right off, but photoshop to the rescue, I used the burn tool a little with a teeny tiny bit of shapening and croped the shrimp some, see if you like them. A minimal enhancement to some great shots.

  11. Hey Doug,

These look great -- and I especially admire the squid. Those graceful (and tasty!) critters have eluded me so far. I want the shot you got!
