trigerning studio lights trough the uw housing?

4 posts
  1. I will shoot some modeling photos on the beginning off Mars in a pool

As lighting equickment we will have pro Studio strobes around the pool with difusers etc...

I have no strobes and the pool is max 2 meters deep. Is there any way to trigering the studio lights when my d70 is inside the housing?

There are some radio devices but they are to big to fit inside the housing.

Maybe trough the Nikonos V bulk? or trough a UW strobe?

maybe a solution is a uw housing for my sb800 strobe... but will be the siganl stronge enough to go trough the water?

Maybe with some extra long cord i will put the sb 800 in the surface....

Any ideas solutions etc.. are welcome...

  2. Not knowing much about studio lighting...it seems that if you attached a UW strobe to your camera and placed it above the pool that you could then use the studio strobes as slaves based upon that flash.

  3. Lambis, I have used wired strobe sync cords from the ceiling of an arena for basketball, about 70' total length. So I know a wired run quite long will work.

In your shoes, I'd sacrifice a cheap Nikonos sync cord, and splice it to a length of Cat 5. Waterproof the splice well with a glob of silicone.

Wire the Cat 5 to to a female strobe PC terminal. Connect to studio strobe.

Hazards: your D70 is possibly exposed to shore power in the case of a water-caused short.

Personally, I'd connect to an old strobe that can be triggered via PC cord, like an old potato masher; then use slave sensors. This would electrically isolate the camera, and keep the light under water better controlled (you wouldn't have the reflections from an UW strobe off the surface, etc).

    All the best, James

<edit> I should say, I'd connect to an old strobe that was above the surface, and triggered by the long PC cord. And some studio strobes have slaves built in.

if i put it on the end av a long nikonos V cable (Who sell long ones 2-3 meters) and isolate it will silikon i can use it over water with a radio trigger or any strobe...

the other solution may is the ikelite wireless TTL Slave Sensor on long sync cable over water but i dont know if its can trigger studio lights
