Hmmm, interesting ???

  1. Hi all,

Had a very interesting conversation with a BBC producer today.

They are interested in some of my footage, which is good but here's the twist.

One programme wants me to shoot my stuff in standard DV because they have had trouble with the Z1(HDV) footage concerning fast moving fish (drop outs, blurring maybe) and the quality after compression from HDV - DV. Apparently its un-useable.

Another programme loves my stuff to but they want it in HDCAM because HDV is not good enough for their 'Blue-chip' production.

So was the purchase of the A1 a good idea ???

Should I have gone for a PD170 set-up and waited until later to go HDV.

Should I hire stuff, sell stuff, buy stuff..walk around in the buff ;)

This is something new to think about.

  2. TUFF TO BE ON THE CUTTING EDGE, SPECIALLY IN THE BUFF!:blink:;)

  4. Well ya get that...

Why don't you just convert the HDV stuff to mini DV and send it in and see if they notice it.

The HDCAM..well, dump some to a HDCAM tape and send it it to see if they notice that as well.

If they do then that's life. <_<

Some of the stuff I see on TV is not perffect and from the BBC. Some they zoomed in the shots when editing and look very soft / unsharp.

Yesterday arvo I took my FX1 out and filmed the baby tutlles hatching. Im sure I will end up selling the material to someone thats for sure and the shots I did get, would of been very hard if not impossible with a full size $$$ camera.

Soon they web will be our TV anyhow once they release the new tech that allows one to send allot more data down a normal copper telephone line than broadband etc does now. (full-length DVD movie in less than five seconds)

It's called FAST :Fast Active queue management Scalable Transmission Control: Protocol

There will be online TV stations everywhere and free to air TV can stick their anoying 13 commercials in a row every 3-5 mins attitude.

  5. At many TV stations, they require the highest resolution. Because it has to go through a mpeg2 compression onto a broadcast server, up and down through encoders, decoders, then finally to your desktop box receiver. Almost all sites I go to, they stay with a few standard formats. HDCAM, HDCAM SR, DVCPRO50, D5, DigitalBeta, DVCAM. HDV and MiniDV are not really used in the broadcast arena. A few places do accept it but to really ready for everything, you'll need a few different decks.

    1080p, 1080i, 720p, HDTV formats accepted, Dolby-E encoding. 8 Channel audio.

  6. Upconvert to DVC Pro HD.

  7. Upconvert to VHS

  8. Sounds like the first station is still on the learning curve for using HD footage. If it's not downconverted properly, it does look like hell...

7MBPS MPEG2 and progressive to 720x480 works pretty well for me.
