I noticed the C3030 had a min. of f/11, the 4040 f/10, and the 5050 f/8. Has anyone had a problem with insufficient DOF, especially with macro? The CP5000 and G3 are also f/8 I believe.

This was discussed in a prior thread, you may want to search to find it. It does describe why F8 is not F8...
James do you recall where it was discussed?

I'll try to find it. On her web site Cathy Church points it out as a problem going from the 3030 to the 4040.

The shorter the focal length of a lens the greater the depth of focus of that lens. Because the actual focal lengths of lens in consumer digital cameras are so short you will find them to have a much greater depth of focus than of an equivelent 35 mm SLR. The usual complaint with these cameras is that there is too much depth of focus.
The new DX 12-24 lens should have a very good depth of focus.
