  1. Finally got the chance to dive with my cam and housing earlier and here are the results..

I see a larger percentage of keepers as compared to my first attempt a few weeks back.

Wrecks of Edina & Cayman Trader.

    Comments & critique welcome...

Butter hamlet - Lots better as compared to my indigo hamlet shot before.

Anemone - Out of focus :), which is a bit suprising as it seemed in focus on the lcd monitor

Overall i'm fairly pleased with the progress made and lessons learnt.

Some shots still elude me, fish portaits for example but I put that down to inexperience and the skittish nature of most fish around here.

Anyway as they say practice makes perfect and I intend to get a lot of practice in, :14:.

  2. With the camera you have you are doing fairly good technically, exposures are very good, no camera shake. Your basic skils of composition are good as far as fish facing you, eyes are sharp, shooting more even or up rather than down.

You are using a snap shot camera but really you are doing much better than a snapshot shooter. The wreck shot is just awesome for this little powershot camera, really exceptional, your best shot. It is semi framed, has great diagnal lines and the frame is filled nicely with great texture on the propeller, fantastic job would have thought a dslr camera took this.

I think you are soon to be ready for a better setup but you can still improve a few more things. Think subject matter, the fish are kind of boring the 1st one is ok, would be nice to get even closer , the striped grunt is too far away, both shots have no real pop to them, lacking color due mainly just too far away. Now the grunt around the anemone would be a nice pic. The sea fan needs some fish or a diver in the back, something to add some interest. The sun ball is taken fine technically but you need something in the picture, diver, large fish - something, anything. The crab has some nice color but because of the camera it looks the way it looks. The blurry foreground is very distracting, try to crop that out, I might have tried to get up a little higher or maybe a tight face shot. The second wreck shot is good, would have been nice to get a diver near it.

I am being picky to help improve your compostion you really do a great job with this camera, you should be really proud of that 1st wreck shot and start saving for that DSLR setup you will be ready very soon and are already missing a few shots.

  3. Thanks photobeat for responding and especially for the constructive criticism, i'll try to put it in practice for my next dive.

As to the crab lol, I would have got closer except I was having reservations even being that close considering the size of the crab!

I'm fond of my fingers :).

  4. Hey jam,

Great second effort! i really like the blues you are getting there. I agree with PB about the first wreck shot, outstanding composition.

Your sunburst actually looks pretty good to me, you got a nice spread of light through there, much closer to a film sunburst than most digitals can do.

With your anemone, i have found through playing with a lot of people's PnS cameras that they struggle with close focus , even on macro. If possible for your housing you might be interested in a close focus/macro attachment.

And you see! i told you about your next hamlet shot!! Nice!
