OUCH! I scratched my port!

  1. I have scratched the port on my Ike housing for my Olympus C-8080. Is there anything I can do short of buying a new housing?

Also one of my DS-125s empties the battery MUCH faster than the other is that just luck of the draw and I should buy another battery?

  2. I like MicroMesh for polishing out the scratches in my acrylic ports.

  3. I suppose this is as good a time as any to tell my story. Last weekend I was out diving. We were on a boat in a pretty remote place in Bali and I put a nasty coral scratch in the center of my 8" Sea and Sea dome. We were on the boat with nothing to fix it with.

So my buddy Nick Jackson (credit where credit is due NickJ - thanks!) pulls out a little bottle of Jif Cleaner Cream and suggests I use that to try to buff it out. I put a little on the cream paste on the dome and buffed for a bit in circles with my finger. It came out perfect and saved the dive and the rest of the trip! It worked great even though I was on a tiny little boat soaking wet and rocking in the waves.

It seemed to do a suprisingly great job of smoothing out a pretty deep scratch but leaving the surface very smooth. I plan to have a little bottle with me in my kit from now on

  4. Regular (not Gel) toothpaste works well also. It's slow but that's what I like about it--it's hard to do too much damage too fast. It's also already in your luggage so there is no need to drag around any more extra stuff with you on trips.

  5. Acrylic ports are more succeptible to scratches than glass ports. But if the scratch isn't too bad, water will fill it in, so you shouldn't see much in the photos.

  6. Google for NOVUS plastic polish. It comes in plastic bottles as well as in little sachets called travel packs. Three grits to choose from.

As for the DS-125s, could be that the battery isn't taking a full charge or has a loose connection somewhere. I always travel with one more battery pack than I have strobes -- just in case . . .

    I got mine HERE.

  7. Chris, Which one of the micromesh products do you use?

BTW - Thanks for all the tips!
