Nikon 5700 with Ikelite 6190 housing

  1. I am about to get into the digital experience. The coolpix 5700 with the Ikelite housing looks to be a good fit for my needs. Does anyone have any experience or advice on the above setup?

  2. You might want to go to the Ikelite website and read the last part of the discription for the 6190 "The exotic 35-280mm equivalent zoom lens of the Coolpix 5700 provides superb capabilities above water, but the lens diameter and distance it moves in and out precludes the addition of optional lenses to the housing. The wider angle 28-85mm zoom lens of the Coolpix 5000 may be a better choice underwater as its design allows addition of the superb 19mm lens from Nikon and 20mm wide angle lenses from Inon or Sea & Sea."

I wanted to go with the 5700 or the sony F717, but their zoom lens seem keep you from adding wide angle lens or micro lens (someone let me know if this is incorrect). My advice is to go with a Coolpix 5000, or the Olmypus 5050. You can set up a U/W rig for the 5050 for about how much the Ikelite 6190 costs. Use it for about 2 years, and then wait to see what is on the digi market at that time.

  3. Due to the distance the lens travels doring its zooming cycle pretty much renders the 5700 useless for a housing using full zoom potential.

A port could not cope with this kind of distance as the WA would be vigneted. It's like trying to cross a squirrel with well hung mule.

  4. One has to wonder though, why would you want to cross a squirrel with a mule, well-hung or otherwise? :)
