Slave Operation 101?

7 posts
  1. I have a YS90DX with 12 levels of output control, and I need a second strobe; they don't make the DX any more. The YS90Auto does not have the same levels of output control.

Did I read correctly in a previous post that a slave strobe will match the output level of the primary. - That seems pretty amazing. So, if I set my DX to manual and dialed it down 3 stops, and set the Auto on slave, then the auto would fire 3 stops short of full dump? Really?

I might rather have 2 DXs except that it would be nice not to manually have to set 2 dials when I wanted (I will have dual bulk heads and sync cords)

  2. Thought I read somewhere that Aquaticas are available with the Heinrich iTTL converter. If this is true it may be a consideration.

  3. What would be the advantage of this?

  4. If normal TTL is not available with a housed D200 (as is the case with my D70) this converter would provide the same function. Thinking about having it installed in my Nexus D70 housing. Set strobes on TTL & forget about them. Converter automatically sets the proper power setting. I'm also using the YS90DX's. S&S has a new strobe coming out soon. Check their webpage for details.

  5. I'm pretty sure I have TTL functioning with my current setup - CP5000 in A5000 with ttl sync cord. What do you know that I don't know?

MY REAL issue is that I WANT to shoot manual sometimes, and am looking for the right strobe setup to do this.

    Thanks for my education

    - Beth

  6. Let me be more accurate the YS90 Auto has 12 f-stop settings. Sea and Sea says these are designed to be set to your f-stop and then. I'm thinking this is designed for the situation where you don't have a TTL Sync setup.

It's not clear to me that this would work as a manual setting. I cannot even tell from the S&S picture of the back whether there is a manual setting.

  7. I read your first post tp mean you're looking for a dual strobe setup for your new Aquatica D200. Sorry if I misinterpreted. Not being familiar with the YS90 Auto vs the 90DX I can't answer your specific question about that strobe. Just from the S&S webpage it sounds like you can change the f-stop setting on the strobe to essentially change the power setting. Do you know if the Aquatica will provide iTTL capability? I think it will not, but not positive. My D70 only has TTL if using a Nikon Speedlight. Most DSLR folks shoot in manual mode, so you either change strobe settings (a pain) or camera settings (alot easier). If you would like iTTL with the new system Aquatica can install the converter I mentioned above. Have you looked for the DX strobe? Even thou discontinued there are probably a few still left somewhere.
