Stacking macro lenses...

5 posts
  1. Just wondering if you can stack an Oly macro 165mm on an Inon 330mm macro lens? I'm assuming you can, same type of lens, just different focal lengths? Magnification would end up being 2 x 1.3 = 2.6 is that correct?

This is the only thing I've found specifically regarding this.

    Thanks, Wyatt

  2. Hi Wyatt,

Yes, you can stack macro lenses of the same thread size and get good results. They are not really "magnifiers" though, they are diopters. So this means that the equation won't work. You will still get higher magnification, but not 2.6x - you may get more or less. You are also going to have to get closer to your subject.

    Cheers

    James

  3. Thanks James! Yeh, after I feel comfortable with this 165mm, I'll start stacking. Very interested to see the outcome. Maybe, since nobody has done it yet, I'll post comparison shots of the same subject with and w/o stacked lenses.

  4. Yes it's possible.

I use 2 x 8 diopter lenses to take macro shots. They are just land lenses that I use underwater with quite good results.

The issues here are focusing and DOF. Focusing becames quite tricky, as the camera to subject distance at which the camera is able to focus is rather narrow. And DOF becomes extremely short, so were you focus the shot is critical to have acceptable results.

Besides those issues (which can both be overcome with practice) I cannot think of more drawbacks.

  5. 2 x 165 INON stached on a 5050. Hard to top this shot with a digicam
