Question regarding Ike big dome mounting

3 posts
  1. I have the 8" dome port and Ike housing for the Canon 350D.

I was wondering if the either of the two sliding Port Locks should have any play in them once the port is sealed. I would have assumed that the locks should be snug, but one of mine has some play. I tried to tighten the screw that holds the lock in place, but it didn't make much of a difference.

I have tested the house in the bath tub, and think I got a few drops inside. I am not sure if they were condensation, as the water was very cold. I am letting the tub water heat up to room temperature before further testing.

Any thoughts on the on locks?

  2. Hi,

I don't have the 8" dome yet, but I do use an ike housing for my D70. The 6" port wobbles a bit too. but once you get a couple of feet underwater the pressure snugs it up. From what I understand port wobble is common with most housings.

But its also the reason to take care when you have your rig in a rinse tank.

    I hope this helps

  3. Screw that mounts the port lock should be tight, but not so much that lock can not slide back and forth. Movement of ports will always be possible when installed. Seal is side-to-side on the "O" ring so it makes no difference. Any leakage you detected would be because the "O" ring was extruded when pushing port into place. Port "O" ring must have slight amount of lube on it. Port is pushed down into place and held there while fastening the port locks. Do not let port pop up and then push it back down as this can cause "O" ring to be extruded.

The seal of the interchangeable port system is the only design that allows you to see if it is correct. You can look through the clear plastic and see the "O" ring seal. If it looks sealed it will be sealed. Every other SLR housing relies on theory and hope. There is no way to see if the port is sealed properly on an aluminum housing.
