Lanyard solutions???

8 posts
  1. Hello all -

I have an aquatica A20 housing and I want to have a lanyard for it so it can't escape my grip no matter the underwater situation. I used a small - divelight type lanyard with my old ikelite housing for a sony digicam. The aquatica dslr housing is a bit more robust and I was thinking I needed something a little more sturdy. The simple question is what do you use??? I have seen everything from the light lanyards to bungee cords to rubber bands. I am looking for suggestions on the best way to attach it to the housing. If anyone could include a pic of their lanyard setup it would be appreciated...

    cheers!

  2. Simple solution: a snap bolt clipped to your BCD, and a short length of rope tied to the housing...

  3. Unfortunately I cannot get to my housing to get a picture right now, but I use a coiled lanyard much like this diver's direct lanyards

The Aquatica housings are nice becuase of the holes on the handles. I simply put the rope end through the bottom hole on the right arm of the housing, and then looped it back through itself using the clip they provide to secure it. It always looks like its going to slip, but never does. When I am diving I clip the brass end to my BC and since it is the elastic I can hold the housing as far away as I like, or even just let it hang below. If I am on a safety stop i can put the clip on and it stays right there next to my side.

    Works perfectly.

  4. I have a boltsnap on the handle.

Lanyards have never worked for me...they always seem to:

    >reach out and snag (insert object of choice here)

    >hinder motion

    >sneak into frame of wide angle

    >for that matter, sneak in front of my mask

Housing is either in my hand, on the bottom, or (during gas switches, when I could care less about the fate of my housing) hung from the left hip.

    All the best, James

  5. I used to use a lanyard, but don't bother anymore. Although occassionaly wish I did. E.g when shooting freediving out in the blue.

  6. I've never used a lanyard except for in the White Shark cages at Guadalupe. Even then it was one of Ikelite's molded ones which would break with pretty extreme force (better my camera, than my arm :)

Lanyards make me REAL nervous, possibly slipping under latches, etc. It's either in my hand or on the boat....Simplified diving gear, proper weighting and buoyancy techniques as I've posted many times will minimize if not eliminate the need to clip stuff off IMHO....

  7. I made one up a bit like Mat's - and certainly feel happier when swimming across the blue with it attached. I can't say that it has ever really got in the way or caused me problems.

I also have a couple of Fastexs on my BC and ULCS arms. If I need to use both hands in extremis, I can clip up my housing to my BC.
