Any issues with LMI Z1 housings buttons?

7 posts
  1. Does anyone know if there are any issues with the buttons when diving deeper 200-300 feet with the buttons on the housing and handles on the LMI Z! housing?

With this I mean if the springs are too weak so the buttons spontaneously start to activate the functions due to the increased pressure at depth.

  2. Well, i was doing a single tank dive on air the other day for 2 hours at 500 feet and the buttons worked great!

What are you doing down there...I assume you must be a tri-mix or heliox technical wreck diver or just a deep junkie:)

The housing is rated to 300 or so feet so that should not be an issue. There is plenty of spring in the buttons i have observed. I believe they pressure test in a tank below this depth.

Your issue may come with the 80degree lens if you get this. I recall it is limited to a shallower depth (maybe 200feet). I have seen this to be the case with several other wide lens. At that depth you will be 100% on lights so a wide may not be necessary regardless...you won't have a wide FOV anyway.

I would ping L&M with this one.

  3. I had no probs at 1650metres and we were down there for a week. On a 12lt without a pony.

    Sorry had to join in..!!!

  4. It is always nice to hear from people with a sense of humor... :-)

Yes, the camera and housing is intended to be used mostly for technical diving wich also possibly includes deeper wreck dives (200-300 feet is actually not an uncommon target depth when diving certain ship or airplane wrecks).

Since I a couple of years ago heard some complaints from divers regarding spring tension in the handles of some housings and I now wonder if these issues has been resolved. I will certainly check with the manufacturer but also wonder if anyone on the forum has had these issues with LMI housings.

Thanks Shawn for the info of the wide angle... That is actually the lens that I had planned to purchase. I have to check this with LMI.

    Sincerely

  5. When I was diving for Coelacanths in South Africa, we were planning on hitting 100m/330ft on trimix rebreather (Cis Lunar). So I have my S&S tested to that depth... didn't work. I then tested Sealux and it worked. The other person had the LMI Bluefin for the PD150 and he tested to 90m/300ft. His Fathoms SWA also was fine down to that depth.

Well anyhow, we found the Coelacanths at 55m so it was all for nothing.

As for lighting at that depth, I assume you are going to light. There're 2 ways to do it, get REALLY wide lamp heads like those from watervisions (160-180°) single head multibulb (2x 200W) or get dual 100° beams, which gives you 200° coverage but the battery pack will be heavier. This is for covering wrecks. The Halcyon HMI is nice but not really wide enough for a SWA100° lens. Really depends on the look you want.

  6. I checked with LMI and apparently these issues does not exist anymore. They have rebuilt this housing including the handles/buttons from scratch and LMI dive this housing frequently to around the 250 feet mark.

The 80 degree wide angle lens is rated to 250 feet but can apparently without a problems be used at 300 feet.

All this sounds pretty fine to me...

  7. Scubadru, did you really see coelacanths? I would like to hear about that....I thought they were extremely rare.....
