question on ttl with ikelite housing

  1. I have a Nikon d70 in a Ikelite housing that has the new ttl, when using the ttl mode I guess you set your camera on the auto mode, how do you keep the flash from flipping open, someone said put a piece of tape on it, That just doesn't sound right.

  2. The D70 auto flips the flash only in the 'auto' mode or the modes with the icons.

If you want to use auto mode then use the P mode instead the 'Auto'

A piece of tape is good also to ensure the flash will not open by accident if the button is pushed by mistake or not by mistake if you want to change the exposure of the flash.

  3. Maybe your Ike housing is different to mine but the hotshoe connector on mine is just big enough to keep the flash 'down' if a inadvertent release takes place.

On mine the flash just comes up by about 2mm then stops ( and it does not flash in this position ).

  4. I don't really think this is a problem since my D70 housing doesn't even have a way to press the flash button in the housing. The way to select Flash Exposure Compensation is with the TTL buttons on the back of the housing. I'm not sure what happens if you somehow select FEC in the camera and on the housing as well.

You should shoot in P mode at least because it gives you the flexibility to select aperture and shutter speed combination. I would suggest that you use manual mode however. In either P,A,S or M the flash should not pop up since you have no way to press the button. FWIW the flash connector in my housing also holds the pop-up flash down. It won't fire unless its all the way up.

The SB800 behaves the same way. For this reason I hate the green auto mode.
