First DSLR lens/port combo

5 posts
  1. Have been following the recent threads about lens choices but as one of those taking the plunge into DSLR my intial investment will be limited to probably one lens/port setup.

(I am decided on the D200 but not decided on a housing yet - too much choice!)

Maybe I am being unrealistic but i was hoping that I would be able to put together something that was workeable for the next twelve months or so then I can build on the intial investment as finance allows.

Eventually I will probably aim for the 10mm and 105mm options but at the moment I would be concerned that 12 months of w.a. only or macro only would be frustrating.

There do seem to be some mid-range zoom lense options but what are the benefits /drawbacks of zoom lenses? Are they potentialy an expensive mistake.

    Any help/suggestions greatly appreciated ?

  2. If you want to be conservative get the 60mm and a kenko TC 2X instead 105, that give you nice portraits and nice macro. If you want to take a chance with new zoom lenses (i did it..) get Sigma 17-70mm macro wich give you 1:2.3 of magnification, good low light AF and doesn´t need a diopter to focus behind a dome...

  3. Check out this recent thread:

If you Had to Pick Just 3 Lenses...

This should tell you all you need to know about the conventional wisdom on the relative importance of lenses underwater.

FWIW I would get the 60mm macro and the Tokina 12-24mm first. Both are inexpensive and will get you most shots. I'd get the 10.5mm and 105mm when you can.

  4. I think he meant Tokina 12-24. Tamron makes an 11-18.

    The Tokina is better.
