only leaving fire pin on hotshoe connector

  1. james i am trying to pick up on something you said in another thread:

The Inon strobes work well with Canon. I used 2 Z220's with my 1DmkII. I removed the pins in the housing hotshoe, leaving only the center or "fire" pin

i am trying to figure out why did you do that? i have used my z220 connected with all the pins, and have not seen any concern with it, but then again i may have missed something :)

is this something i should be considering?

    thanks for your help

    /paul

  2. Hi Paul,

Some cameras act wonky when the TTL and ready signal pin are left connected. I don't know if the 1DmkII is one of them, but if you're not using TTL, then I see no reason to leave the pins connected.

    Cheers

    James

  3. when you say removed the pins, do you mean 'remove' ? can they go back in? or do you just cover them somehow ?

  4. It depends on the housing.

    Cheers

  5. thanks for that james ..

thinking about this, then maybe the i did see some strange behaviour when trying a d2000w.

for some reason the camera switched off and would not restart until i removed the battery and put it back in again; i think i have by mistake left the camera on s-ttl mode. something to investigate.

ok this begs the next question: how easy is it to remove (and put back in again) the seacam pins?

    /paul

  6. Hi Paul,

Luiz uploaded an article about how to remove pins from the hotshoe in Subal housings.

For Seacam, you can literally pull the pins out w/ your fingernail or tweezers.

  8. Hello Guys

My D70 does go "doo Lally" with all 5 pins connected. i just simply use electrical insulation tape to cover the pins.

the bouns of doing this on my D70 is

The Camera now does not think that a flash is connected "but it is only via FIRE pin" so i can use shutter speeds outside X-SYNC

not sure how Canons work when only fire pin is connected, i presume the same if the camera is not being told that a flash is connected.

    regards

    Craig

  9. Funnily enough, my D100 doesn't like the Inon strobes, but my D1X doesn't mind them at all.

With the former, I have to tape the front right-hand pin to get the camera to work (otherwise, it won't even let me take a shot, and shows a blinking red strobe led inside the viewfinder), but with the latter, there's no issue at all with all pins connected.

Both cameras are housed in Secam housings, and I used the same sync cords for both. Go figure...

  10. not sure how Canons work when only fire pin is connected, i presume the same if the camera is not being told that a flash is connected.

That is correct, Craig. The camera doesn't know there is a strobe connected. Perfect!
