Just stepping into the uw DSLR scene... Just bought a DSLR and starting to line up the housing, lenses, ports, and strobes. I have an older Inon D-2000 (optical only w/o the nikonos connection). Is it worth keeping this D-2000 to be used as a slave? Or is better to have dual strobes that are sync corded to the DSLR? If you are setting the strobes manually, is there any added benefit of having the 2nd strobed sync corded vs a slave triggered optically by the master strobe?
Trying to determine if it is worth keeping the D-2000, or pawning it off to offset the cost of new 2nd strobe. I am leaning twds the new Inon Z-240 as the master strobe.
thanks,
HI
IMHO, i'd always cord the strobes up. this ensure's that they are certain to trigger if asked too.
slave systems (if not linked optically) tend to work better shooting macro and you can be sure that they will trigger.
the D2000 will certainly work, but i'd rather have the assurance of cords.

thanks craig for the input... Seems the consensus I'm getting is to get two strobes to wire together... Plus I just realize it would be a nightmare having a slave strobe while diving with other photographers and watching the slave flash everytime someone near me takes a picture...
Now to see how much I can get for a 1yr old D2000...
Soo tempted to make a comment here about coral.....
Go right ahead Mike... but then I would have to respond about your special filipino boyfriend j/k
Anyways, I'll just bring this slave strobe to Bali in Oct and remember to keep it pointed at your mask at full exp....
coral and philipino considerations aside
fwiw, if you want to keep your d2000 you can opticaly connect it through fiber optic and a neat little thingy that screws onto the optical sensor. this will avoid the flash being set off by other strobes.
check the inon pages, it's one of the optical D connector thingies.
Paul, that is a consideration... But the Inon "Optical D Slave" Cable is not cheap (approx $100). Depending on what I can get for my D-2000, I rather apply that $100 to a newer strobe that allows it be controlled thru a sync cord.
Also, for some odd reason, I noticed that Inon America sells the Z-240 for $750 in the states whereas it goes for just over $500 in Japan and HK.
i know, those prices are a bit crazy, i guess if you want local support, you pay for it in the price of your products, personally i purchase in japan, and as inon make quite solid products i have not yet had too many support issues.
there can be a second use to the optical connection when you use 2 strobes even if you go wired for both, and that's as a back up just in case you flood a synch cord, or a housing port. you would still be able to connect reliably the 2 strobes without fear of stray light setting them off. but then again that's probably belts and braces
