My first photos with Subal ND20

6 posts
  1. Hi everyone !

This past Sunday was my first day underwater with my new photo equipment, the Subal ND20 and the Nikon D200.

I was a little excited after a long wait and I didn't really know about the D200 performance underwater, I have to thank Dave Marsh from Underwater Photo Tech for the great costumer service.

My first dive was with the Nikkor 16mm 2.8D, and.... I was amaze with the big viewfinder of the D200 and the Subal, I don't think I will need the GS finder.

The camera autofocus is great and very accurate and a huge improvement compare to the Nikon D100,but for me one of the must important features is the speed of the camera shutting Raw files, I used to get very fustrate with the D100.

Here are some of the photos I took.

  5. Nice images - thanks for sharing.

What I would really like to see is a comparison between the D200 and D2X shot at the same site so I could compare blue water color. I really like what I've seen from the D2x but so many factors go into water color that it's hard to judge.

  6. I was offered a D200 camera to take on my recent trip to Malaysia, and asked if I could borrow a Subal housing for review purposes, and to do back to back tests against the D2X. But with so many back orders for D200 housings the manufacturers really don't care about reviews!

As a D2X user I would say that the D200 is a better underwater camera for almost everyone (as I believed the F100 was better than the F5). The housings are much smaller and lighter for travel, as is the camera. And it is cheaper should it flood (not that I have ever flooded a Subal in 7 years of shooting them).

I am off to the Red Sea in a few weeks - and there will be several D200s on board - so a good chance to compare images taken at the same time.
