First Dive Photos

  1. Hi

I'd apprectiate tips & critiques on my photos. 2 are posted here along with a link to view others. I'm a new diver, so, also a new UW photographer. These were taken with the CP5000, Wide angle lens and normal lens set to macro, Subal CP5 Housing, and 1 Sea & Sea 90 strobe off the coast of British Columbia (Vancouver Island). Vis was about 30' and water temp 42ºF. No touch up in PS...just a slight re-crop. Other than that I don't know what the heck I'm doing!

    Thanks for your input.

    C.J.

  2. Great pis for the first try. I wished my first would have be so good.

but even if they are so good do thom PS work and they get better!

  3. A few of us are travelling to BC in Aug for a dive trip (see Port Hardy in Dive Destinations). Is the site you dived anywhere near where we could be diving for the Port Hardy trip?

    I suppose Yahsemtough may know!

  4. I like this one:

Your lighting on these shots is very good. Did you use TTL on the Coolpix?

Your macro shots are great. A very good start! For macro, you can look for ways to isolate your subject from the background and "draw it out." This helps make the photo really pop.

For your fish shots, try to move around to the front of the fish so that you can "shoot it coming, not going." Your rockfish shot could have been improved a bit that way - assuming the structure around the fish allows it. Fish shots are always the best when you are the same level as the subject - not looking down.

    Hope that helps,

    James

  5. Yes, very good for first try.

Please post your settings used and the place you were, I am curious as I do know the area.

And Yeah, another Canadian on board!!

    Welcome

  6. And Yeah, another Canadian on board!!

    Todd,

Don't put youself down.........let us do that for you!

  7. Problem with that housing it got lost...HAHA

Now what was that you were going to say again? I may be able to find it again.

"Don't bite the hand that feeds you" See picture again if you need.

  8. LOL. I can't wait till were all on a boat together. Do you think we'll actually get any diving in?

  9. Maybe the first of many more trips...around the world. You can't beat a good group. Thus my return to the Shark expedition again in July.

I should take a picture of that housing before it gets sent and email it to you. I isn't here yet by the way, I mean when it comes in.

  10. Thanks for the great feedback! The rockfish was just lodged in that ledge, he seemed like a cooperative subject that way, and I was up against a rock on my right. I agree that "coming, not going" would be better.

The strobe was set for TTL, the camera was on aperture priority setting. Totally at the "try anything" stage still. Does anyone else shoot with only one strobe? What am I missing out on....besides embarrassing myself trying to manuever with 2!

Also, do you move your strobes for each shot or do you set them and sort of work with subject matter that will be only in that range?

I have yet to go to Port Hardy. There is a place there called "God's Pocket", that should give you an idea of the beauty there. It is on the northern end of Vancouver Island and so far I have only been to the south end, the Nanaimo area. It is still beautiful. Lots of easy access shore dives. See the map in the link below to get an idea of where you'll be diving.

I also dive in an area called the Sunshine Coast. Just north of Vancouver via ferry to a town called Langdale.

    Hey Todd...where are you located?

    C.J. :)

  11. P.S. I gave a little bio in the Introductions section of the Galley

  12. a) Does anyone else shoot with only one strobe?

    B) What am I missing out on....besides embarrassing myself trying to manuever with 2!

    I do...

    Not much.

  13. Hi, we are actually going to dive Port Hardy on the Exta Sea. It will be our third trip with them.

I know God's pocket but, have always done the liveaboard route.

Nanaimo is not too bad, I have had fun there. A friend worked with Sundown.

    I'm in Regina, SK

  14. That will be an awesome trip! I'll be looking forward to all of the pics.

Hey Todd? Saskatchewan.......got any pics from diving Buffalo Pound? :)

  15. Well...none underwater. For reasons I am sure you must know.

    Where are you located?

  16. I use two strobes so I'll have a back-up in case of flooding...........sad but true

    Where are you located?

I'm not familiar with Buffalo Pound...my dive buddy wanted to ask. Sub-zero vis is all I've heard. How often do you get out to dive & do you do any local? I'm originally from Alberta, so I know what the lakes are like.

I work in downtown Vancouver and live in the burbs about 45 minutes east.
