  1. hi could you tell me how to get a shot of a fish at night in mid water so that the fish is coloured and detailed but the water surrounding it is black. is this something i do in my editting suite or do i need to have my camera strobe set to something. many thanks.

  2. It should happen naturally on a night dive, but you can acheive a similar result in daylight with a higher shutter speed.

  3. Hi Stew,

Karl is right. No need to dive at night to get this shot. To get it in the day simply use a small aperture (F8-10 on a compact, or F16-22 on a DSLR) and a fast shutter speed. Somewhere in the range of 1/200-1/500th. This will stop the ambient light from coming into the camera and the subject will only be illuminated by a fast flash of light from your flash/strobe.

Attached is an example, taken in the day. Taken at 1/250th at F16, on a DSLR.
