10D can still do it...

  1. Hi Folks,

I posted a couple weeks back about the 5D being the best camera I've seen for Sunball pics, and while I love my new camera and can't wait to finally get it in the water...even in a cold water dive, I have the say, my trusty 10D can still deliver the goods...though not as easily done in comparison to the 5D.

  2. niii-iiiiice,

i'm a proud owner of a 10d myself! haven't had the chance to use it in wide angle yet, but soon, soon. this gives me a good idea of its performance. thanks !!

  3. Once again proof that it's the Indian and not the Arrow....I doubt the 5D can improve on this shot unless the exact combination of camera settings, water condition, sun angle, etc. are at play in exactly the same way

    Well done Stu :P

  4. I'm still shooting a 10D, too. Still pretty happy with it. Plus, if I bought a new rig, I'd have to forego a trip :D ! Here are a few 10D shots with the sun in the background I took in Raja Ampat last year. Tried hard not to blow out the sun. Rendering of the jpegs i nmy browser is pretty awful compared to what I see in Photoshop, but you get the idea. You know work is too busy when it takes you seven months to actually edit all of your pictures :P . But I'm getting there . . .

One of these days I'll finally get wide angle -- just need more practice so I'm going back to Indonesia for three weeks in September .

  6. Stu, When you say "my trusty 10D can still deliver the goods...though not as easily done in comparison to the 5D." what do you mean? How is it more difficult?

I still shoot with the 10D and am always seeking to better my U/W photography. I am off to the Bahamas in a couple of weeks and want to work on "sun burst with shark" shots while there. Any insight as to how I can increase my chances of success?

By the way, its great to see the awesome results your get with the 10D. One of the things I constantly struggle with these days is feeling like my 2 year old camera is obsolete and that I need to update...

That's a great point. Those pixs look great even with "old" technology. Of course, after I just upgraded from the D100 to the D200......... :)

  8. Well, I've had my 10D since February of 2003. When the 20D came out, I didn't see enough improvement (at least for underwater) to warrant a wholesale upgrade. Now that the 30D is out and equal to the 20D, picture wise, I figure I might as well wait a bit longer. Dell did have that coupon deal for the 5D at $2340 last week. Made me think for a split second :) .

  9. Hey Mike, Bill

I've had my 10D for about as long and it has served me well both photographically and financially, easily paying for itself after my 1st commercial shoot with it. As Karl said, a lot depends on the Aboriginal American (being PC here) v.s. the pretensioned wooden projectile hurling device! :) I was very determined not to go the 5D path and even passed on the 30D (I was in the top 5 for the waitlist on both cameras with Allen's Camera)

I was very happy with my 10D until my Sulu Sea trip when one of the guys handed me his Aquatica housed 5D with the EF15mm FE. The resulting images ... http://wetpixel.com/forums/index.php?showt...5&hl=5d+sunball

...simply blew me away. An "Actual Pixel" zoom of the image will let me count the individual coral polyps on the whips. There was no cyan fringing whatesoever on the sunball, something that happens with greater frequency on the 10D than not. That coupled with the near instant startup as opposed to the 10D's 3-4 sec has made me a buyer. It did help that Canon offered a $300 rebate for the 5D as well as an upcoming catalog shoot.

I'm keeping my 10D as a backup camera, it still produces beautiful images and likely for super macro applications, I'll use it instead of the 5D....

I never bought into the EF-S line since the 10D doesn't support it anyway.

    Stu ;D
