Given a Canon EOS D30, need some parts..

  1. well my uncle gave me his old Canon EOS D30 housing.. figuered I could have some fun with it and from what i've read it's a GREAT camera for only being 3.2mp.

Now, I need to get a few parts to get it up and running.. and dont have a clue as to where to find or buy these parts.

I've tried ebay but all I can really find is batteries and memory cards..

The harder things to find that I need are:

BAckup battery and backup battery cover (looks like a giant watch battery)

    USB cable

Software for a MAC OS X platform.

does anyone know where I can find these parts?

I also need a recomendation as far as what lense to pick up for every day use...

I'm excited to have an SLR camera, it should come in handy :)

can I email canon and get the smaller parts such as as the backup battery cover, software and USB cable?

    thanks :)

  2. Welcome to the club and have creditcard ready :)

I don't know much about the backup battery, but let me take a shot at the other items.

USB cable: You don't need one. I've never plug my cameras to the USB port. If you think you really must have it, it's a standard USB cable you can get at any electronics shop. Get a compact flash reader for your MAC to download your photos, it's much much faster than the old USB1 on the D30.

Canon software: You really don't need this either. IMHO the only thing worth having is the Digital Photo Professional raw converter, which I now like better than Photoshop's raw converter, but there are many choises. If I didn't already have the software, I would look for a copy of ANY EOS digital camera software CD. The CD have both mac and PC versions. I don't know if the MAC have compatibility issues. The version of the software on the CD is not important. Having one installed on you machine will allow you to install the current version which you can download from the Canon site. Digital Photo Professional really is the only piece worth having.

I don't have much to tell you about every day lens for the D30 as most of the Canon lenses for this size sensors are EF-S mounts which won't work on your camera. There are some nice Sigma and Tamron lenses you can get. Search around.

  3. thank you for the quick reply and great answers. I was thinking of just getting a CF reader instead of the typical USB cable, it'd be easier anyway.

Will Iphoto work with the card reader?

  4. You'll be happy with this housing as it offers some upgrade paths also - it's possible with minor modification to put a 20D in this housing and have access to all the vital controls (aperture, shutter, AF button, shutter speed, review). Look on here for the neccessary mods.

  5. I guess my biggest hurtle now is to find where i can get a backup battery and back up battery cover as well..

    anyone? ... anyone? :)

thank you for the reply bacripe, i'm excited to get to know this camera.
