CAnon S70 + Sunpak G-Flash - a review

  1. Hi all -

Since this appears to be a fairly popular option for starters, I am posting my first impression and a few photos taken with the Canon S70 camera and the Sunpak G-Flash here:

Hopefully, it will be useful to people considering this rig. Comments welcomed.

    Cheers,

  2. That was an excellent review. I enjoyed the photos too.

Be very careful with the strobe. Make sure to check the battery cover.

  3. Vandit, nice report and you covered exactly what I used to love and hate about my S70! For its size, it's an amazing camera. Still can't figure out why Canon nixed the RAW capability on the S70's successor, the S80. As much as I hate camera's and dive computer beeping, you do have to turn the beep option on the camera to confirm AF lock (I also had a tough time seeing if the AF bracket was green or yellow... Anyways, look fwd to seeing some photos with that new macro lens of yours! Oh do get some silicon gel packs, they pretty much eliminate the problem you had (the S70 does get hot. It's not just the internal flash, the camera body around the battery get's quite warm after extended use).

edit: btw, nice wildlife shots on your photosafari website!

  4. Deserteagle - thanks for that warning on the G-Flash. I've heard horror stories about that cap myself, especially on Scubaboard. I plan to use it eventually as a slave for backlighting or for top-side photography.

Mike - the package was forwarded to our island office and should arrive tomorrow. Am going to go play with it in a couple of days... and yeah, I am going to turn that audio beep on. Finally got my paws on some silica gel, and I'll also try purging the housing with air from the tank first... that should reduce moisture inside as well.

But I am already starting to look for a replacement kit - either an E900 or a DSLR, cannot decide.
