Diopters for PT-010/015?

  1. Using the Inon macro lens, other people have reported better results with diopters on ike housings. Anyone know of diopters that will fit on the Oly housings?

  2. Check your local store for a 67mm closeup kit, or surf to B&H sr somewhere. I've not tried a straight diopter on the housing and must wonder if an optic designed to be used in air be as effective as a water-contact optic. One way to find out, though . . .

  3. Diopters designed for use in air will work differently underwater. Assuming the diopter is glass, its underwater power will be 1/4 that of air.

See the scubageek website for articles on diopters.

  4. There's an "underwater close-up adapter" PCU-01 sold by Olympus, seems to be manufactured by UN.

    I have used this with a C5050zoom in a PT-015 housing.

With this adapter, using AF focus mode, and full zoom, according to my tests an object 38mm across will fill the width of the picture, at a distance of around 6-8cm from the housing (not sure exactly). There seems to be only a very short range in which the camera can focus.

Without the adapter, in Super Macro focus mode, 48mm is the smallest size which will fill the width of the picture, and the object needs to be about 2cm from the housing. In Super Macro mode you can focus at any distance greater than this but you can't zoom. Also there's no TTL flash control in super macro mode, but you can use TTL in AF mode with the adapter.

Some examples are at uk.photos.yahoo.com/d3m2m in the Kapalai folder; almost every nudi shot is a relevant example. The macro shots in the examples above all use the camera's internal flash (+ diffuser which I mounted outside the housing at the side of the lens barrel, to try to eliminate the shadow cast by the lens barrel). I'm not an expert so someone else might do a lot better than these.
