DSLR and strobes

  1. I'm thinking of upgrading to a DSLR camera and housing. At the moment I'm using an Inon D-2000 TTL strobe with fibre optic cable for my Olympus C-5050 camera. Will I be able to use this strobe when I upgrade to a DSLR camera system or will I have to change my strobe to one with a 5-pin connection cable?

  2. I believe you will have to change, i am not 100% as i am not familiar with Inon but i believe there is no hotshoe for that strobe....

  3. erika, I am running into the same problem. I am moving up...someday...to a DSLR and am wondering what to do with my NEW Inon D-2000. I have learned so far that I can't use it with an SLR except maybe as a second strobe firing slave off of the first. Read this as, I need to sell my new strobe and buy an Inon Z-240...or keep it and buy a Z-240.

  4. It depends wheteher you use your D2000 in low light conditions or not. In low light, the strobe sensor of the D2000 will be able to detect the strobe of the Z-240 and it will perfectly follow. The condensor's capacity of the D2000 is good enough to produce several preflashes, so that's not a problem.

I tried in the beginning to have my old D180 as slave strobe to my Z-240 but sometimes it didn't fire (with lots of ambient light) or it couldn't follow anymore, since my Nikon D200 produces 1 or 2 preflashes; in the last case the D180 could not follow. You certainly have to buy a new hard-wired strobe.

One thing that pops up in my mind now is that i think it's also possible to have a glass fibre slave cable connected to the Z240. In that case the ambient light isn't a problem anymore and you'll be able to use the D2000 as a full compatible slave strobe, but you have another cable .....

    good luck with it, Udo
