Ike Housing & SB 105 sync problem

2 posts
  1. It seemed that the pics from the first day of diving were without color and strobe. Thankfully It was photo week and Mike & Mike were there to test my D70, Ike housing with my SB-105. They found that the ITTL was confusing the camera and the strobe was firing before the shutter. They taped over 3 of the contacts on the hotshoe and this solved the problem. It saved the rest of my week and I got back some great photos for the first time using this system. THANKS again Mike & Mike!!

My question is that I have a 5 pin ttl sync cord that I was told would work with the Ike housing and SB-105. I am looking for a 3 pin non-ttl sync cord, does anyone know if they make one? Also, has anyone had this problem before?

The class taught us to shoot in full manual and I want to stay with that at this time, so getting IKe strobes is not the answer for now. I bought 2 of these cords brand new, so if anybody needs this cord, let me know.

    Thanks for any info!

  2. Hi MPC - very glad that Mike & Mike were able to solve your issue creatively.

The SB-105 is not iTTL compatible, but work fine as a manual strobe on any housing including your Ikelite. This is not a unique problem for you. There is no way to have SB105 fully compatible with iTTL no matter which route you choose.

The only strobes that do work in TTL mode with the Ikelite housing are the Ikelite branded DS-series (digital) strobes. If the tape on your hotshoe is working, there is no real need for you to get a 3 pin cord - you effectively have a three pin cord already.

The key advantage of using Ikelite strobes with the iTTL D70 housing is that you can adjust the manual output of the strobe on the housing itself, rather than having to reach over to the strobe. I'm currently using an SB105, but will be getting a DS125 for exactly this reason. Of course there are other advantages too (much faster recycle time, built in modelling light).

It is excellent that you have learned to shoot in full manual as that will serve you in good stead.
