Seeking Adelaide operator recommendations..

3 posts
  1. Spending some time in Adelaide in January on the way home from Solomons. We'll be mixing wine touring with some diving (not on the same days!) and staying in Adelaide. Would like to get operator recommendations for day trips in the area. Primary goal is to spend some time with leafies, and would do a dusk/night dive to look for pyjama squid or blue rings if we can. Don't mind shore diving, but would like to have a guide.

    Thanks for any info.

  2. 2 possible ways. Jim Thistleton on Kangaroo island is a great guy who protects the leafies from photogs. You'll have to spend a few days on the island (also sea lions and dolphins to shoot too).

Rapid Bay Jetty is about 2 hrs from Adelaide. Talk to Glenelg Dive Centre for equipment. You don't need a guide at rapid bay, just swim around the area at the end of the pier and finish at shore. Bring rope to lower your housing. It's about 300m from the shore to the end of the jetty.

Blue rings are everywhere so try your luck at Rapid bay. I had pyjama squids in the day time at Rapid Bay too. Just look in the sand for the eyes.I found mind while shooting a weedie. If you want to stay in Adelaide, rent a car and gear, do 2 dives at Rapid Bay and then do Sea Cliffs near Adel and Nyts. I think my trip report is still active on D2D.

  3. Thanks, Drew, I was hoping you'd chime in, though I knew you were still out on the water..

I'd love to spend some time on Kangaroo Island, but on this trip we'll be spending most of our days in Adelaide hitting the wineries that we've always wanted to see. Hoping that we can get back sometime and do Kangaroo Island.

Thanks for the tip on Rapid Bay. Sounds like the ticket. Have also heard that Edithburgh jetty is a good bet for pyjama squid, but maybe not as good for the leafies. We may be able to do both places, on different days.

    Thank you!
