Slave strobe needed for Casio Z1000

  1. Just returned from a trip where one of the divers used a housed Casio Z600 with outstanding results! It was determined that and outboard higher powered slave strobe was needed due to the total inadequacy of the onboard strobe.

The Casio cameras all emit a pre-flash which schweckles up (confuses) most slave strobes. When the lens opens, the strobe has already fired based on the preflash and hence, no auxilary illumination.

Does anyone out there know if the Ikelite DS-125 with the slave sensor will solve the problem? It's a pricey solution but if it works....

Thanks to all for your input on this board!

  2. Hi,

Many digital strobes can be configured to either:

1 - Ignore the preflash and fire on the main flash only

    or

2 - Fire a small preflash along w/ the camera and then fire a main flash when the shutter is open.

Have a look around - try strobes by Ikelite, Inon, and Sea and Sea. Fisheye also makes (rebrands) a small housed digital flash that can be set to ignore none, one, two, or three preflashes. It's tiny, cheap, but not that powerful.

    Cheers

  3. I know this is an old post but it got me thinking and raised a question for me.

I use a Z1000 for freediving because it's so small I can carry it with me anywhere and I've even had a camera mount made for my speargun that will hold it. It's so tiny it doesn't get in the way.

I also have an old Sea&sea YS-90 slave strobe from and old film setup. I played around with it in the house, but will this combo work together underwater? If I end up going with a new digital setup, with a wired digital strobe, can I use this slave strobe effectively?

Anytime you can pull out an old piece of gear, that's just been sitting in a box for the past 5 years, and make it work it's like finding money to me. :)

    Jon
