I just spotted this on the Nikon site http://nikonimaging.com/global/news/2006/0601_01.htm I've not noticed any mention of it anywhere else and a search of the forums didn't show anything. Sorry if it's old news.
Not sure what the differences are.

There was a thread on here about it, but I can't find it either!

there are about 20 improvements over the D2X of which most of them will be upgraded by a software revision on the D2X in this fall. The major hardware change is an illuminated highspeed area in the viewfinder. not big changes IMO. infos on dpreview.com
